stock intake install

I recently purchased a used stock intake for my 5.5 Gen to replace my cone filter that came with the car. I just bought all the hardware that Nissan said I needed, which was like 4 or 5 screws and two clips.

I actually only bought one screw and got Ace hardware to match up the rest. At 5 bucks a pop they can get pretty expensive. Anyway, I purchased the airbox and the snorkel on the forums. It seems pretty easy to install but I was wondering about this hole on the bottom. Is there a jug or something that is supposed to attach to this or is it supposed to be open? If the hole is supposed to have a closed off jug (I'm guessing for keeping it quiet), can I just plug it up with a cap?

Here is a pic of what I am talking about.

that part was cut out prob for a tube that lead down to allow more air to flow in (Cold air intake). stock would have that part closed so if u want stock, just close the hole.

Whoever you bought that from appears to have modified it a little. They cut off the lower section of that.

That should extend much lower. From what I can assume, it is there for two reasons. Sound and water. It traps water when coming into the snorkel so it doesnt travel into the airbox.

Should I search for another snorkel or just plug the one I have already purchased?

I would just install it and see what happens. The factory original was closed and only had a small 1/8th" hole drilled at the bottom so that if any water came in through the snorkel it would be able to drain out.
I don't think you will have any ill effects if you install it. If water gets into the snorkel, it wil escape through that hole and where it's positioned in the engine bay it is not low enough to suck up debris and you will be running a filter anyway so that would protect anything being sucked into the MAF.
You could also see if you can wrap a screen around it with some zip ties to close it off and prevent any debris from entering it?

Just plug it but drill about a 1/8" dia. hole in your plug/bung. That intake snorkel is stock, and is used, I think only on the '00 cars (one of which I own) that have that bottom opening connected to a large, white plastic resonator box (and it does have a one or two "drain" holes in the bottom). I think it (the resonator box or whatever it was) was deleted after '00.

'02-'03 definately did not have anything white connected. It is all a one piece plastic snorkel.

I went to Ace Hardware today and bought a 3" cap and some glue. Ended up being a perfect fit, all I had to do was drill a hole 1/8" and glue it on just to be safe.

Total Cost: $0.69

Nice job that will work, I had already sold my stock unit some time ago, but here's a pic of the parts and the guys are correct that piece simply needed to be closed off.

Nice pic, I really wish I had that pic when I first started this project. I had no clue what all I needed. Luckily my car had everything except the snorkel and airbox already.

I actually had the opportunity to purchase a 2002 airbox and snorkel with the gab mod already done to it, but I decided I wanted a completely stock intake for now.

Originally I wanted the stock intake for troubleshooting and I don't like the whistling that you hear with cone filters at a certain rpm range. Since the gains aren't significant with a cone it's not worth it to me and if I did gab mod, I might as well have a cone instead.

Well, using the airbox from a 2000 or 2001 Maxima worked out ok. One of the mounts on the airbox was snapped off so I only had one left to screw it to the car.

Over all I don't think performance has changed, although I was expecting a rumble from the intake which would threw butt dyno off I'm sure. No more squeaks when shifting in a calm manner. Who knows, maybe down the road I'll invest in a nicer aftermarket intake. Depends on how much I miss the roar from the old one
