what had happened was...

so saturday night, heading home from a night of bowling im doing about 70 when i realize i need to switch lanes quick due to a semi with flashers on in my lane. There was some dbag rolling up fast in the left lane so i lay on the pedal AND....it starts to downshift and fails.
The dash lights up like christmas and i've got absolutely no response from the throttle, car is still on though. I roll to a stop and shut it down. Start back up AT CHECK flashes a few times and SES is still on but car drives home fine.
What the hell happened?

edit: its my 02 auto

AT Check? I own a 6-speed, but it sounds like you may have no tranny issues.

Sounds like the torque converter did not lock up causing your car to stall......possibly.....

yea and it didnt stall (its an auto), i just got no response from the throttle-very strange.

I didnt try to bury the gas again since but it was a smooth and powerful ride in. Just odd..maybe ill get the code(s) pulled and see what registered.

alright so its throwin a P1800(TCM) and P0228 and there was another but im drawing a blank on what it was now. It was a Air metering and TPS/Pedal Position(whatever the P0228 is not).

just to update...obviously the P1800 is VIAS not TCM. I think i've figured out what actually happened. Not quite a week ago when pulling out of my street i was unable to push the gas pedal. The plastic pedal stop had come off and was standing up, preventing the pedal from depressing.
So i pulled it out until i had time to put it back in. I'm pretty sure thats what tripped the whole system up at this point, the pedal went too far and it cut off to prevent damage i guess.

Pedal stop is back in and i've cleared all the codes. We'll see if anything comes back.

So your car does the exact opposite of what Toyotas allegedly do in that scenario.

So, apparently all drivers going fast in the left lane are douche bags?

That's why it's often referred to as the "fast lane" or "passing lane", isn't it?

Food for thought...

yes, 'passing' lane, not the lane in which you practice the 5 D's of dodgeball.

I say dbag primarily because of the poor driving etiquette displayed and the ricerfag 15000k cheap ebay projectors blinding every car ahead.

I had that problem happen to me once also, I never really investigated it too far. I pulled codes at work but I forget what they were. Long story short, it must've been a "hiccup" in the computer or something, because it only happened that one time and hasn't happened in well over a year. I remember it felt like it was stuck in 3rd gear, no power or anything, and wouldn't manually shift. I didn't drive it long like that and I parked it and let it sit for a little while. I don't recall mine having the MIL on though, but it was so long ago I don't really remember. I just remember it going away on it's own

well mine didnt feel like it was stuck in anything...pressing the throttle did NOTHING, the car was at idle rpms and i was coasting at like 70mph. going into 3rd did nothing so i put it into neutral and coasted to a stop.

Overalll it sounds like the torque converter 'slip' - ie not enough fluid fast enough for it to shift - though not a 'true' sign of low fluid - it's worth checking the level... honestly can't think of anything else it could be (especially with the car running normally after the event...)

this does remind me why I prefer 5MT...

Weird. Mine was at low speed, under 15mph. Had no go to it whatsoever. Maybe two different problems haha

as i said above, myself and a nissan tech(buddy of mine) determined it was indeed the fact i had pulled the pedal stop. There was a TSB regarding it and new pedal stops shipped for the small percentage of max's that shipped with the faulty (too short) ones.
The TSB does not apply to my car but having the pedal stop out caused the issue.

Max is back up and running like a champ.

Good to know! Now at least if mine happens again I'll know where to look haha. Congrats on finding it!

The APPS voltage deviated too much from the TPS voltage, and it went fail safe. No torque converter fancy talk here, that's what happened, and why are you, Rods03Max619, bumping all the old threads with no valuable input whatsoever?
