Please help, is it my clutch!?

I have a problem with the clutch or transmission in my SE 5MT. In first/second, if I get on the gas the RPMs build more quickly that what I thought that they did, but the car does not accellerate in what feels like a linear fashion. Also, the car SEEMS a bit louder than normal, but that could be tires, road noise, or just a greater attention to the car's noises. We also have been keeping the radio off to listen for funny noises, which might make us more aware of "normal" sounds. At first, my response was "slipping clutch."

HOWEVER, I tried some of the other acid tests for slipping clutches and it tested fine. For instance, at 20mph in 2nd, I shifted to 5th and floored it and did nothing but bog.

Any ideas? I am 90% sure that the sound level is louder than "normal," and I am pretty sure that the 1-2 RPM build is either tranny (gear) slip or clutch slip. Might it be transmission bearing problems? CV problems?

BTW, shifting feels completely normal. Clutch engagement is hard for me to measure, because it is so different from my car.

please help can it be my clutch or is it a gear?

your gears wont slip unless they are stripped but you would know if that was going on.

I think it is in your head, i think you would know if your clutch was slipping. You are pretty connected to the car in a manual and the clutch slipping is pretty apparent.

It will be helpful if you stated miles on car/tranny, have you check your fluid? When was the last time you change tranny fluid? etc, so other can get a better understanding of your situation.

I tried doing the test by putting it in 5th gear at 20mph and WOT. Did nothing for me either. Later everything died. I needed clutch, tranny, and everything connected. it started doing the slipping in gear you are talking about first, off and on. Then it got worse and started doing it in first gear. Then it just did it period. I would start my car without depressing the clutch and it would just sit there, in first gear, not even pressing on the clutch and not moving.

Get it checked out.

Sounds like the clutch to me...not much else it can be. It's definitely not stripped gears. When mine was bad it did similar things. Shifted fine, felt fine, etc. Even got up and went okay from the line. It was most noticeable in 4th around 45mph...WOT and you'll see the R's go up but not an increase in speed for a few seconds until it catches. I imagine it all depends on the severity of it. Bummer on clutch replacements. I picked up an Exedy and put it in with a buddy. Takes some good tools and time to replace. The feel is pretty light but it holds just fine.

Good luck!

Oh no doubt in my mind. Just letting OP know what they are in far if they wait on it. It's funny too because I took it to a very well known transmission shop that even did free checks. Told me everything was fine at the end of the day and its running great. 4 days later we had another shop that has done work for us before do all the work because the first place we went to missed everything.

My car is in the shop now getting a tranny rebuild for my 01 5sp. Do you have any kind weird noise's? I had this rubbing noise issue and could not find out what it was. Later noticed that my drivers side axle was leaking where it connected to the tranny. Took it to a tranny shop and found out that my bearings inside were totally shot. Shop said I needed new differential bearings, seals, blocker rings and some other stuff.

Before you jump to conclusions can you smell your clutch? If your clutch is slipping you'll probably be able to smell it when you get out of your car after you've been driving it. I'm not familiar with how Nissan set up the clutch pedal assembly but I know on my DSM you can adjust it. Just a thought. Good luck with it. Clutches are such a pain to deal with.
