The day has finally come ....

I never though this day would come. ..

Scratch that ... I've anticipated this day for a very long time, but, and today, it finally happened.

This forum is a little less lively than I previously remember it so.. that's the reason behind the thread.

My MAF died.

I had been getting these intermittent/random problems during startup with rough idling, stuttering, etc. And today was the day. I couldn't get above 2 and a half k.

Still made it to work, legally I shouldn't be going over 2.5k on my way to work re: 55MPH top speed limit. But there's a pretty sick hill that I couldn't break 40mph on, and i usually like to take it a little faster than that. So it was just me and the 77 year old dude next to me, though that was short lived since he passed me eventually.

anyhow, I bought a used DEK unit years ago from one of the DEK vets around here, so that's the plan after I get home, install that ****.

Notes: Pig rich @ idle & below 2k(below scale less than 10.0).

Richer than normal during normal highway driving, I had to let off just to it could regain a reasonable AFR (12-13).

MAV V/% hovering ~ the 50% mark, and going lean (19.0+) when bucking, bouncing off 2.5k.

That is all.

Oh yeah .. I forgot to add the details people care about.

I bought the car w/ 39.7k in 10/2004 ( 10/02 production date)

Currently 121,xxx. So, even if it wasn't original, still gave me a good. 82+k.

Nmex i thought you were gonna say the max was totaled or you bought a new ride and leaving the forum. May the Maf rest in peace. Agreed all these new members and some of the old members leaving... seems like the forum is hitting its next generation of owners...

When you state that you could not get the engine past 2.5k rpm, you do mean that it would not rev past that point correct? To further elaborate it seemed the car was limited to that rpm range.
Reason for asking is I am having similar issues with my maxima. BTW my maf has 82k on it and is still OEM.

Yeah, it's a painfully common problem for the A33. It's like there is a limiter @ 2.5k, that is if you've ever hit the limiter before.

If you're in a drive gear, it will buck like psycho horse, and if you're in neutral/clutch in, it will just sound like, well a rev limiter.

Mine usually goes a littler further than 2.5k

Not a day goes by without some kind of MAF thread bumped to the top. It feels... inevitable, I suppose, that this will happen to us all eventually. I'm just hoping my low mileage keeps me off the Dead MAF List for a couple more years.

If not, thanks to the Org, I know exactly what to do now, in as cost-effective a way possible. Heck, I even have a little IAT thermistor set aside for that day.

just so i get it right ,
IIRC you get the cheaper 2000-2001 DE-K maf for ~$90 and transfer the 2002-2003 thermister (IAT sensor) into that.

That being said my only question is if your 2002-2003 MAF is bad how is it that you can transer the thermister into the new MAF? Wouldn't that be broken too? Or is it that the thermister typcially isnt' the broken part of the MAF?
Thanks in advance.

For the 5.5 gen, Nissan moved the IAT to the MAF, piggybacked to the outside of the MAF sensor. The 5.0 MAF and the 5.5 MAF had slightly different designs. But it seems that over time Nissan merged the parts supply line, with the only actual difference being inclusion of this little thermistor. They never adjusted their prices, however. Go figure. $100 vs. $400, where the only difference is a $1 thermistor.

Another member here (2slow) figured out which thermistor to use. Give him a shout if you're IAT is fried, and you need to arrange for that little piece of electronics. It's a very, very tiny electronic part. Giving it a proper name, like IAT Sensor, seems overkill. But anyway, the odds are the thermistor is fine, and you can transfer it. A few month ago there was a great thread documenting all this stuff.

Ah, here it is. Excellent discussion:

i was looking for that thread thanks, I used this one over the years.
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...r-2k1-maf.html
Odds are the thermisitor is fine. But you never know right?

Also a note that Scottwax picked up how this guy says this version of the 2k1 MAF had the correct thermisitor.

I went to my local napa store and had them order me a reman 01 maf sensor as that is all they can get. Well, much to my delite the one i got was identical to the one that fried and already had the thermistor wire on the sensor. All i did was pull the reman sensor out of the tube and put it in my old tube that is still in the car. Hooked it up and i cant beleive how much better this car runs! I have even gained 4 mpg and am now getting 28mpg. For 120 bucks you cant beat it. Cleared the code out of the comp and havent had a ses light come on yet.

Lucky guy, huh?

Prophecy, how about you follow suit and order your MAF from NAPA? Then tell us what happens. If NAPA can source the 5.5 gen MAF at $120 without fail, then that's our forum's silver bullet. Post your finding in every MAF thread you can, and that will pretty much end all this MAF confusion. When threads like this come up with all kinds of MAF questions, people can simply say, "Buy from NAPA. Done."

That would be awesome. Go for it!

"reman 01 maf sensor", obviously means "remanufactured". But I wonder what *that* means? Parted out of an insurance wreck and put in a box?

from what I read. the 2k1 MAF from NAPA comes with the proper thermistor for our 2k2 and is plug play.

This thread was an attempt at humor and boredom since this forum is dead these days, there is no question, i.e. I'm not asking anything in the OP (my) first post.

Should we clean the MAF every oil change? That's what it says on the CRC MAF cleaner.
