Crazy Idea!

i have a very interesting idea. is there anyway to tint the speedometer a dark color so it darkens when you turn off the car and lights up when you turn it on. the look im going for is this.

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...ion-stuff.html

as you can see it is an opaque tint and when the car is turned on the light turns on and you can see it.

i thought of it when i saw this thread.

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...er-manual.html

if i mod my gauge cluster with brighter leds then tint it and wire the dash lights to come on when the car is turned on(this is not really necessary since i drive with the fogs on most the time).

what do you think is it possible?

I don't speak from experience, but I would say "Why not?".

If you were to wire the instrument panel lights to turn on with the ignition and then run LED bulbs (for added brightness), I don't see why you couldn't easily pull out the gauge cluster and put some tint on it. Might be kind of a nice little mod.

Really the look i would really like would be of the 2008 maxima or the 2006 acura tl. i think that the look is amazing the way it lights up when the ignition is turned on. I am trying to find pictures but having a difficult time. if anyone has done this or have any pictures please post them, any inputs and ideas are welcome as long as it pertains to darkening the gauge cluster

I suppose you could tint the lense with 5% film, and wire in a couple of LED's just behind the cluster lense on a switch for daytime viewing. Would make a cool write up if it works.

That could work but I was thinking more along the lines of just brightening the gauges and tinting the lens, but the led sounds like it could work. Its just the light distribution that has me worried, the leds on a switch would look like a knockoff iphone with the bright spots of the leds clearly visible or atleast that's how I see it. I'm trying to figure something out so I could do this in 2 days so any input is greatly appreciated

Well you have a good point. I imight have to try tinting it first just to see what it would look like then brighten the gauges.

Can anyone tell me what the % of darkness(I don't know what its called lol) for the tint is compared to the i35

The i35's is annoying.. Try the i30s, basically looks like the maxima one with the dark/light up display your talking about.

Why not put in I35 gauges...? I'm sure they'd fit.

(Also, I hate the gauges in my 35. For a "sports sedan" they're boring. I like the Max gauges with the chrome rings around the mph and rpm gauges.)

I agree that the layout of it is not very sporty but the tint is exactly what makes a car look sleek and sporty. That's why nissan added it to the maxima in 2008 to try and m.ake it look sporty again and not like a lincoln town car
