Turning crank

Welp i got a call from the mechanic who is putting in my motor, he is the shop chairman of sheehy nissan, i bought a used motor with 79K miles and he was going to put it in today when he called me and told me that, he tried turning the crank pulley and it turned but then it stopped, it turned for less than 1 RPM then stop, is that normal, should i have him proceeding with the install or try to get a different motor, he will be out of town on vacation so idk when i will 1-get a motor which is still warranty 2- get my car back... i always thought its either the crank turned or it didnt and the stop is due to compression and a motor with no oil thats been sitting for who knows how long

Were the spark plugs in the engine when he tried to turn it over?

Sounds like its just your normal engine compression..

I would have him pull the plugs out and turn the engine over to see if it is just the compression, and to also check that there isn't any liquid in a cylinder...

Sounds normal.

Either the engine turns (at all) or not at all in most cases.

If there is no obvious damage, like a rod through the block, its generally probably fine, and would just be your normal cylinder compression.

Have him try again with the plugs out.

You should definitely be able to turn the motor over with the spark plugs out.

Something is wrong there.

Unless the mechanic is really weak...

If he's a mechanic why doesn't he know the answer to this question? Have him check the cylinders and valves with a scope or whatever they use.

By my experience, I had a motor that would turn a half round and stop and it was toast. Timing got messed up and pistons were hitting the valves. But you should be able to look inside the spark plug holes and see that.

I'm thinking the motor is bad, so unfortunately I gotta get another one (which this motor has a warranty), I'm just moreso upset at the fact that now I have to wait damn near months to get my car back after waitin these past 4, 5 months already... unless I can somehow get a motor to him today which won't be happening... I just wish there was something to be done so it would turn... obviously not

Well, the story is... my trans and motor went at the same moment of driving home from work.... at the time I didn't kno if the motor went so I ordered the trans which took a week, there was dang near a months procrastination til I heard the motor was bad, had to wait til my next paycheck to buy the motor which had to go from north dakota to maryland, then after months of procrastination I am here.... to make story short...

Had 140k when I pulled it. Ran super strong and no burning oil. One of those few motors that ran better then the masses. Local guys can vouch. Will let it go for $500 + shipping.

Where you located at? might find something on car-part.com if you haven't checked yet. Try to find an LKQ with one and you might be able to talk them down on it. LKQ warranties and properly preps all their stuff for sale. I bought a 10k mile motor for a focus they were asking $1200 and got it delivered for $600. But i do quite a bit of business with them.

nice, maybe give them a call and see what they think. They would probably swap it out no problem if they think theres going to be an issue. I would have the mechanic figure out whats up with the original motor though.

I was just getin ready to say, how in the hell does a "shop forman" not know if the motor is good or bad. Sucks you are going on almost a year with no whip for simple motor and tranny job. FYI, no more 50 runs with 3 gears num nuts.lol.. BUT IMO its just better to work with Brandywine , it might be more expensive but, they are local, warranty is just a ride to pick another one up. Chris and aaron have had atleast 7 vq35's most replaced from warranty. ****, brandywine evens offers install.

Look on the brightside you have saved over 6months of gas money.
