Recurring Brake Creaking Noise

I've searched thoroughly and can find very little information on this specific problem. My brakes make this awful creaking sound like you're walking over a loose wooden floorboard (like you'd hear in a haunted house). The sound appears only when going very slow right before coming to a complete stop. And it's only on the driver's side.

It first started about 6 months ago. I lubed up all the brake hardware and the caliper where the metal hardware clips are inserted. Problem solved, no more sound.

A few weeks later it returns. i buy some high end lube and do it again and sound is gone again. This time it took a couple of months before coming back. After reading on this site I decided to put on new pads and and get a new hardware kit. I got all OEM stuff thinking this would forever get rid of the problem.

A couple months later and it's back again. I don't want to have to keep doing this every couple of months. Any ideas on what could cause this issue that goes away once shims, clips, and calipers are lubed?

I've got exactly the same problem. I've re-lubed the brake pad mounting points as well, but it isn't making any difference in my case. I'm in desparate need of new struts, and I was wondering if there is some movement in the strut assembly as I am coming to a stop. I'm going to spray WD-40 into the strut mount this weekend to see if it makes any difference.

Have you looked at any of the suspension parts to see if they might be the source of the creaking?

since putting lube on parts stops the noise (at least for a while), I think you found the problem area and the solution. It's just a case of using the wrong lubricant that can not hold up to the forces of braking. I would suggest using a grease made from white lead. I haven't needed any for a long time and with today's political no-no that goes with lead, it may be hard to find.

yes, clean the piston thoroughly and be careful when pushing it back (use pad).

Add me to the list...I was just going to make a post about this. I re-lubed everything with hi-temp caliper grease and no change. I get the noise just as the car comes to a stop and again as I release the brake. To me it seems that some component is being stressed and then released with the braking action. Could it possible be a transmission mount?

Mine's an '01 auto with 133K...and the original struts.

Y'all check the "backing" plates behind your rotors, the heat shields. Make sure to inspect the full 360 sweep, you could have a small ding or dent pushing one into your rotors causing the squealing.

had same problem, my is 98 though, got the pads from ebay, notice the pad is too big and covered to the outside to rotor, there is a big cut on the pad where it touches the edge of rotor after test drive, I think that is where the stress come, changed the pads from pepboy it is ok now

hey i put some lube on the particular wheel and its gone it only hear it when you brake extremely hard my mechanic thinks its just a collection of rust or dirt behind the rotor that causes that or if you use aftermarket parts you will hear that

So I'm resurrecting this one. I lubed up the brake hardware every couple of months and it would go away temporarily. I also got new pads (OEM) and new hardware and nothing changed.

I talked to a Nissan guy who said it was a warped caliper where a space is created every time the grease wears off between the caliper and the hardware. So I got a new caliper (actually a used one online) thinking this would fix it. But the sound came back again.

I'm at a loss. Some of the suggestions here just don't make sense to me simply because it goes away with nothing more than lubing up the brake pad hardware. With that being the case, how could it be related to the rotors or suspension, or anything else?

I'm having this exact same problem too!! Just haven't had a chance to take everything apart to troubleshoot. I'm only having this problem on the front passenger side brakes. I replaced my front brake pads with akebonos and rotors with brembo's.

Same problem here, but Ive located it to the Passenger rear brake only, wonder if its just a lube problem. Or E-brake possibly?

i've been getting brake noise (squeaking during cold mornings in reverse - backing out the driveway) for the last couple of years. i cant figure out what the f*** it could be. It seems to disappear for a few weeks after i remove the caliper, pads and rotors, clean and lube everything, checked backing plates. I've replaced pads only, then rotors only, then pads and rotors (ALL OEM parts) and the noise persists. I've changed my rear calipers (seized), done brake flushes, still the noise remains!

I've have my front and rear suspension parts replaced due to wear over the years (struts all around, tie rods, links, swaybar bushings, control arms, strut bearings, etc again ALL OEM stuff) so obviously its not suspension related.

Also, recently, i've been getting a sqeak coming from the left rear brakes ONLY on LEFT TURNS. I've tried to sand the pads and machine the rotors, lube sliders and anti rattle clips. The noise goes away for a week or so and then returns. I've come to a point where i just crank my system and pretend i can't hear it. Cold morning reversing still causes brake squeal.

Anybody have a solution to my problems? Any advice will help.
