Help - Sounds like a baseball card in bike spokes...

So after reading through tons of posts about "pinging" "knocking" "ticking" ect , right when I think I'm about to get an answer somebody goes off on a rant about something different and I can't seem to find a decent answer.

Everyone seems to describe the noise different but it seems to only make this ticking noise "not engine pinging" in low rpm's and only when the clutch is engaged. The noise seems to be pretty noticeable at low speeds like parking lots and such or just letting the car roll at idle in traffic. Seems to be on the driver side and the clicking type noise seems to match the speed that the car rolls in like a rock in the tire(yes I checked). The best way to describe it is just like the title says "baseball card in bike spokes"

Some posts say anti-freeze, heat shield, pre-cats, exhaust leak, wheel bearings, MAF, windshield wiper fluid, rain, heat, snow and on and on. Anybody had any luck with something similar or have a good idea of what I may need to get fixed?

Matching the speed of the car, huh? Have you looked at the dust shield behind your rotors?

It could be scraping against your rotor, or you've a stone jammed in there maybe. Maybe not, but that's one idea that you didn't list.

Um, that's all I have. G'luck.

Thanks Rochester, I'll take a look at the dust shield which I hope might actually be the problem since I recently had 4 new CryoStop rotors put on a few weeks earlier.

Ya the rock thing was mentioned in other posts too and that was checked as well... Thanks for your idea of the dust shield, any other possible culprits I might want to look at?

No other suggestions, sorry. I wrote because last Fall I was hearing this annoying, repeating tinny sound. I would hear it best when rolling in a parking lot where the noise could echo off structures and other cars. And like you, it was timed with my speed.

Someone here on the Org suggested I look at my dust shields. Found where the offending dust shield was rubbing against the rotor, and bent it back a little with a screwdriver. No more noise.

Let's hope it's that easy, eh? Good luck.

check your caliper bolts, in know it sounds odd but i had a vehicle once that had the bolts lossen up shortly after a brake job and it ticked the speed of the car,i never figured it out until one day getting off the off ramp and my caliper came loose and locked up right between the spokes of my wheels....not fun at all....

thanks for some of these areas to check before i tame it someplace and possibly get s screwed... the thing i don't get is that the noise only happens when the car is in gear and as soon as i press the clutch in (should have mentioned the car is a 5 spd i think) the noise is completely gone, ease it back into gear and It's back....

See, that makes me want to say your throwout bearing is on its way out. The "tick" would of course increase with car speed b/c your clutch is engaged (also the time when the tick exists.) Our tranny's are on the driver's side of the car, so the sound would be originating from that basic location.

Chances are it's ticking all the time its engaged, but after a certain speed or rpm, other noises drown it out (engine, road, wind, etc. )

My car is making the same noise, I put the back of the car on ramps and crawled under.. its the exhaust.. it broke from where it connects to the car in the very middle of the car. It was rattling pretty bad and it only happened less than 12 hours ago. I used a 3 inch hose clamp (found that fix using the search) and tightened the exhaust back together with the car. Quick fix for now until I get some money together and have it fixed in a week or 2. There is also a small hole in that area now.

same noise here on my Max. Been having it for the last 3 years. The noise goes away when you push in the clutch.
