What is this plug in the trunk for? It is leaking

I have a leak in my trunk. The spare was in about 2 inches of water today. I do not believe it is the actual light leaking. When you open the trunk on the drivers side there is this plug near the tail light. What is it for? It is definitely leaking. I poured water down the channel and as soon as it got to the plug it started coming into the car.

I'd like to just seal it with some silicone. I can't figure out what it would be for and why it is needed. There is not one on the passenger side.

Here is a pic of the plug I'm talking about.

I'm like you, I have no idea what it is for. But since it leaks, seal it.

Can you take a picture farther away? It's so close up I can't even tell what part of the car you took a picture of even though you just described it to us as well.

I took another picture that shows where the plug is.

I do not have that plug on my car. It was probably there to cover a hole that was drilled so the dent guy can get his tool in there to remove a dent in the quarter panel.

Plug it up and fix the leak and you should be golden...

That actually would make sense. There is not one on the other side and I looked through quite a few pictures here and on ebay at various cars and couldn't see that plug in any of them.

You can tell in the first picture that it doesn't even come close to providing a good seal. There is some touch up paint on that side so you are probably exactly right.

I'll be sealing it up today.

And you just noticed the H2O in your trunk? Did you not hear the slushing sound, LOL?

I'm surprised I didn't hear the water back there. I'm glad I didn't have much in the trunk. It looks like the only damage is the spare tire cover board is a little warped.

Did you drain it via the drain hole?

When I bought the Max, I found out it had a rear job, and was poorly done, no I take it back, it was crap! Water was coming in because they did not weld and patch the trunk. They even left some areas unpainted.

I ended up sealing it with silicone and I sprayed paint and now I do not have water and dampness in the trunk.

I sure did. I pulled the large drain plug and the water drained very quickly. It probably helped that I was on a slight incline.

Guys, that looks like a plug that a rustproofing shop stuffed in when he drilled holes to spray some oil inside the rear quarters.

Not really an issue here in South Carolina either.
