Exhaust help

Hey everyone, I have cattman headers/y-pipe with a custom catback to a magnaflow muffler. The rasp nd drone is getting anoying and i want to know if i weld on the stock resonator from our Maximas will it get rid of the drone nd rasp? i really dont mind the performance loss considering the stock resonator is smaller diameter than my catback pipeing. Thanks alot

I would consider a aftermarket glasspack resonator instead. You can get it as long as you possibly can fit under there and not lose the inner diameter of the exhaust.

www.summitracing.com

Plenty of items to choose from, probably too many items. resonators/mufflers/ etc.

Also, do you a cat converter? If not, I'd think of getting one.

www.jegs.com is another great company. I'm partial to them only because they are local. ;-)

Summit is located locally two, but a few hours local where Jeg's is right down the street.

Yeah them too, IIRC, they have all the same parts, but some are like $0.04 cheaper on either end.

ok thanks for the information guys but as far as putting the stock resonator on would that help the sound? cause i have one laying around and was thing about just welding that on nd not spending money on a aftermarket one.

If it's a "custom" cat-back, sure, why not, if it's a Cattman, then

How big is your custom catback? Are you running a Magnaflow 4" resonator and Muffler now? Or are you just running a Magnaflow muffler? I would just get an aftermarket Cherry bomb glasspack or Thrush glasspack or Magnaflow resonator or anyone sourced from Summit that's at least 18-22" in lenght.....gl! Also how big is your muffler by the way?

the catback is 2.5 inch and the muffler is a magnaflow 14" inch muffler. I was thinking about putting the sock resonator to get rid of the loud raspy sound and drone. I dont mind if i loose some power by putting the stock resonator being that its smaller than the 2.5 inch piping. I jus want the anoying rasp gone nd drone.

Then go to Summit or Jegs, and get something with a 4" body, 2.5" piping, and as stated prior, at least 18-22" in length with a perforated core (not louvered).

Your real problem is both that small 14" body muffler ( 18-22" rear muffler is more suited for the VQ) and having no resonator! If you wanna go for the cheap I would install a Thrush Glasspack which is perforated, 2.5", 18"-24" range and you be really happen....I'm running a 18" Cherry Bomb on my 3rd Gen and it's not louvered but sort of perforated, more like punched holes....GL.....

change the test pipe (if thats what you have) to a hi flow cat and use a 22" or larger magnaflow resonator

I had an exhaust made for my old Accord which included an aftermarket resonator and Magnaflow muffler. The drone at freeway speeds was unbearable so after a couple months, I swapped out the Magnaflow for a Vortec turbo muffler and the drone was completely gone. At full throttle, the cold air intake was louder than the exhaust.

Just FYI to those who mentioned adding a cat in place of a test pipe...at least on the stock exhaust system, removing the cat and replacing it with a test pipe does not add any rasp or make the exhaust louder.

We all know that, and everyone on here should know that headers + test pipe = rasp, no matter the cat back set-up. I had major rasp with my OEM catback + headers & TP.

No rasp with my Cattman 3" + headers + Fastcat

I had a high flow cat on my Accord so I don't know if a test pipe would have added rasp despite the rest of the exhaust because I also had a header and I already knew from other cars I'd had headers on the potential for rasp was there.

The FWDVQ is known for rasp when adding headers and a test pipe. Although, lately I've heard that the 3" actually doesn't have much rasp even with a test pipe.

How big was your tubing, resonator, muffler? I'll bet neither the muffler nor resonator bodies were more than 18" in length each! Turbo (reverse flow mufflers are always quieter than most straight thru perforated mufflers....I know 14" mufflers aren't quiet enough and usually have quite a bit of rasp no matter what size tubing.....IMO a high flow cat is better flow wise than an OEM but it will usually increase your volume over the stock cats....

Everything was 2.5" in diameter, no real idea the length. Nothing huge. The turbo muffler made a huge reduction in noise over the Magnaflow.

I got one of the 4" round ones. I used it in conjunction with the resonator that comes with the eBay catback, and I swapped out the fart can with one of the Magnaflow oval mufflers. I love the sound. Barely any drone at highway speeds.

Yeah our OEM 00-03 rear mufflers are reverse variable flow mufflers and it was quiet even with a 2.5" Cattman Bpipe, hi-flo Cat, and Cattman headers! My 3" Cattman has a little more tone/volume but not bad at all I luv it....

My car is hardly any louder than stock with headers, test pipe, and stock cat-back. If anything I would say it sounds slightly raspy on the outside, but you can't hardly notice a difference in the car. That's just my car though, so who knows. I definately don't have any drone though. To the op...How about adding the stock muffler at the end of your custom set up. That may sound better than your current muffler and a resonator.

I have an extra 2.5" Cattman resonator which is 22" in length (body) and for sale if you're interested for $125 and it's T304 with flanges....connect to the cat....
