Strange Rasp at Certain RPMs

I have Cattman headers and 3" exhaust. There has always been a slight rasp under load around 2000 rpm... it sounds like it comes from the flex section of the y-pipe... I assume this is normal, but lately, just at VERY specific low RPMs under load, I'm getting a really loud rasp sort of noise... it SOUNDS like it's coming from the y-pipe area, but I could be wrong. I'm worried it could be something serious with the engine, but don't think so... could it be a collapsed flex section? What else could it be? Thanks for any help.

Isn't that the good ol bees in a can sound? Did you notice a decrease in performance? I heard wrapping the flex section in header wrap has helped. However if you have a collapsed flex section, you can just get a new one welded on.

I have the same problem as you such as it happening around 2000rpm. I found out it was the flex pipe loose, and its just loose but I don't think you can fix it without getting a new one.

Huh. I'll have to get under there and see if it's loose. Strange that I'd be having problems with the y-pipe though... It's Cattman and only a couple months old!!!

I'd be curious also to know what you find out. I have posted recently in another thread concerning this same problem. An unfavorable sound is coming out of my exhaust also after I installed cattman headers. Not sure where its coming from.

Ha! I finally got around to checking out what the problem was. It wasn't anything wrong with the flex section after all! One of the 3 nuts on the rear header/y-pipe flange was gone! So easy fix. I do however, still have that slight "bees in a can" sound in my flex section that everyone has (not at WOT, just under load at lower rpms). I might just have to try wrapping the flex section in header wrap

Sure it's not header a gurgling sound under part throttle acceleration or throttle lift.....that's what most sound like......I'm very interested in this find.....what did you use as a gasket @ that loose ypipe/header manifold flange? I'm sure the Cattman gasket was gone or burnt away....that's why I bought longer SS fine thread bolts to install lockwashers and my copper gaskets......

Oh, is it just a header gurgle then? I just used the cheap crap gaskets that Brian sent with the headers... They actually seem to be holding up so far I think. I'll probably have to go a similar route as you someday and get some new gaskets, but as for now, they're fine.

What are you talking about by a header gurgling sound? Does everyone experience this with headers? and where did you get the copper gaskets from? I have been overall disappointed with the sound that I got from my Cattman headers. Impressed with the power though.

The gurgling sound is very apparent during throttle lift and decelerating... three of my vehicles have headers and exhibit this....During part throttle acceleration you may experience a burbling (deeper) depending on what catback and intake you are running......The copper gasket I purchased online from Summit or Jeg's brand is SCE p/n 4220. I have them in the photo laying in front.....

Once you fix the gaskets (may require a little trimming of the bolt holes) you'll love the sh!+ out of these headers.....GL
