Broke off engine mount bolt in tranny

See title. How important is it to have all 4 bolts? One sheared off, and the stud is in the tranny. Any suggestions to get it out besides cutting a slot and using it like a phillips? I think its in there too tight for that to work

You're talking engine to transmission. It's pretty vital to have that bolted up securely to keep anything from breaking or malfunctioning. It's not like a wheel stud snapping off, and riding around without one of the five lugs in place.

I'd say get a drill bit and tap it, or if you're anything for welding, tack five or six small welds on top of the bolt, one on top of the other, until it's tall enough you can grab the weld with a vice grips and twist the old stud out.

^ he's talking about the 4 bolts that hold the transmission to the transmission mount on the driver side.

3 will hold it just fine. I dont recomend it but we have maxima down ther that has been riding like that for years. If you take the car to a good shop they should be able to get it out though.

How the hell did that bolt snap off in there though? Those bolts are strong as hell.

Those bolts ARE strong. I have no idea, it must have been rusted. I was using a 1/2" ratchet with a 1 ft breaker bar, and it wasn't meeting that much resistance, and the head just popped right off. It could have something to do with the fact that the holes werent perfectly lined up...

Pl. note the torque on the bolts are 55 ft lbs. You don't need to be a muscle man to break it loose..

Coming back to stripped bolt, I did realize when I changed my tranny mount, one bolt seem to be not threading neatly.. I didn't care since the other 3 bolts held well.
