What is this thing on my 5th Gen?

That would be the main belt tensioner. To change out your belt you would have to back off the nut on the tensioner pulley itself then turn that to increase/decrease tension on the belt.
Oh and you also have to hope the guy before you didn't over-tighten the pulley nut. There isn't much for the wrench to bite on and the nut doesn't have that much hardness to it.

What color are the wires?
Ok I just looked, The one that goes into the water pipe is the Coolant temp sensor, the red one goes to the motor mount (mine goes to nothing?), and the one that clips to the metal thing goes to the Knock Sensor.
FSM pages EL-464/465 Connectors F8, F9, F22

(from Rochester's tucking thread)

What does that "EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve" plug actually do? I disassembled my intake and stuff one day and then forgot to plug that back in after reassembly. It dropped my fuel economy from 21 to 13 MPG.![EEK!](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif)
I'm not really understanding what change that causes. The evap lines were still connected, so it's not like fuel vapor was dumping into the engine bay? What kind of measurement is that plug taking?
@NissanMan97: Good luck with those nuts. Mine had been overtightened. Then rusted. I think, all told, it took my friend and I SIX HOURS to change the accessory belt.

Identified by Froggmann as Coolant Temperature Sensor, and the other end of the Knock Sensor Harness -- pages EL-464/465 in the FSM.

There's a theme in this thread which is like 180 opposite your question.
Answers to your question are all over this and other forums. All you have to do is search for them.
You can do some of your own research with either the Field Service Manual, CoutesyParts.com, or by calling your local dealership.
And finally -- if it's like my 2003, it's an integral part of the fuel pump, accessed through the floor under the back seat.
Click on the baby for a how-to write-up. Go ahead. Click on the baby. It's probably the best write-up on this topic.

OK -- I'm going to recycle someone else's photo because I can't take a good photo of mine with everything reinstalled:
![](http://www.johnclare.com/pics/cars/what_16.jpg)
OK -- looking at this photo, I believe the front of the car is to the right. (that is to say, this photo was taken from the perspective of standing at the right front fender.)
The coolant temp sensor (lower left hand circle) and mounted into the coolant tube. On my 01 i30, there is a smaller sensor with a single wire coming from it maybe an inch away towards the front on the same coolant tube. In this photo it would appear almost right below where the coolant pigtail comes out of the harness.
What is that sensor?
I just answered my own question in another thread, and thought I'd post it here so others can learn:
Both are coolant temp sensors. The first one is for the gauge in the car the second one, closest to the engine, is for the ECU. The ECU controls the fans based on the coolant temperature, vehicle speed and A/C compressor.

If I had to make an educated guess, it's to insure the window stays in position when going up, so that it doesn't shift to the wrong side and shatter under the stress.

I've heard this before but it doesn't make any sense to me for two reasons:
A) its on the outside, windows are on a rail and enclosed within the door, how would they pop out?
B) 4th gens didnt have this and neither do most cars. why the 5th gen?

I came outside to see this hanging from my exhaust. I'm assuming it's just a cover. But what is it good for?

EDIT: QT1 5MT AE said it was the "cat shield" and T.One verified that it shields it from harder things such as rocks and scraping when you're low to the ground... BAM! lol

That is to guide the glass into the track when the window is being rolled up when travelling at highway speeds. The venturi effect sucks the window out at higher speeds, so a guide is needed.

I've removed every rattling heat shield on my cars and never had a problem. Then again, the manufacturer puts safety equipment there for a reason, and I do not condone anyone removing anything. I'm just saying what *I* do.

At first I think that it was the coolant temp sensor but that sensor it's behind. Maybe it's the coolant pressure sensor or something similar.
Also, yesterday I was taking some photos of the engine bay and I saw this

Anyone knows what is this?

1) It's to tell you that one or both of your tail lights are blown...
or
2) If you have a Canadian car (for whatever reason), to let you know that one of your DRLs are out?
