Headlights just wont come clean.

I used 600, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit wetsand paper on my friends lights, sanding plenty and finishing with plastx and they just wont come clean. Any ideas? Do I need to keep sanding or whattt

Could be condensation in the housing, in which case, you just need to air it out or use a hair dryer.

....I was gonna say.....

Have you cracked the housing yet?!

I do mine regularly on the OUTSIDE....but the inside is starting to haze now.
Going to take 'em out and bake'em soon so I can make them clear again!

That's what I was thinking because my headlight lenses look invisible, while I could clearly see the plastic being sanded off and yet it was still hazy. Must be the inside. Thanks guys.

I picked up some turtle wax headlight cleaner from wal-mart and from what mine looked like before it actually made a decent difference

I used the 3M kit too.
I would say the lights look 90% like brand new afterwards.

Not like showroom new, but awfully close.

IMO plastx doesn't have enough cut to get rid of 2000 grit scratches. You need a 3M kit (or equivalent) and then maintain it with a metal polish like brasso or autosol (it removes light hazing). Make sure you wax them often just like you wax your paint.

Agreed. I normally use my rotary and Meguiars #105 to take the sanding marks out.

Finally someone who has the same problem as I have. So I guess we have no choice but to open it up. You think using Maguire Plastix would work on getting the inside crystal clear?

I need to bake mine and clean the inside as well. While I was at it I wanted to get off all the chrome so the headlights will better match the black tail lights. You know if the chrome comes off easy?

you need to use a power buffer to get the scratches from sandpaper out.

I don't think the "chrome" comes off... you can tape them off and paint them black though

This is good, basic advice.

I've been doing this for years, and my covers look fantastic. Get where you want to be with the covers, then keep them waxed every few months.

Definitely need a powered buffer/wheel/drill and some good 3M to get them nearly perfect, I tried the Turtle Wax kit by hand and it did virtually nothing to the haze.
