Throttle pedal caught on floor mat ('03)

I've read a lot about the allegations and findings regarding the Toyota electronic throttles sticking and causing uncontrolled accelleration. I've not heard anything about this with Nissan vehicles. This post is NOT suggesting there is an issue!

However, just yesterday I was on the interstate and accellerated to pass a vehicle and I pressed the throttle all the way to the floor. Traffic slowed and I released the throttle, but it stayed at the floor. Now, I AM NOT indicating Nissan is in any way at fault. The pedal came up after about 1-2 seconds, before anything became a problem. I noted my all-season floor matt had slipped down toward the pedals and the accelerator pedal bacame stuck when I floored it.

I am posting this ONLY for others to make a note regarding their rubber/all weather floor matts. Mine is factory, though it is out of an Infinity, no difference fron Nissan matt except the writing on it. So, for others running stock or even aftermarket rubber matts, be careful, make sure the matt stays secured. I know I will be better securing the matt this weekend as mine seems to want to migrate off the little plastic pin. I have now experienced this as a significant safety issue. Naturally, this even would have been an issue regardless of the presence of drive by wire.

Horrible thread title.

Horrible situation.

Regardless, this has nothing to do with said TBW staying stuck open voluntarily.

Does your mat have the hole intended for the hook right underneath the driver seat? I would imagine its purpose is to prevent issues such as this? ..

Like the other guy said, if its from the factory, it has the hole near the driver's seat to anchor it to the floor to keep it from moving. My hole in the factory all season mat is so small and tight that it takes quite a bit of effort to remove it from the anchor.

Happened to me too. threw the car in neutral and pulled the mat back. just gotta keep it in place. Glad nothing happened. If it happens again I suggest you throw it in Neutral first then brake and pull the mat back.

Still wondering if the hook isn't far back enough or if yours even has a hook.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Nissans come equipped with a fuel cut system that automatically reduces the amount of fuel being introduced if the driver steps on the brake pedal?

If that's the case, there's really no need to drop the car in neutral. If the thing starts accelerating out of control, just stomp the brake...

Actually, it does. At least in terms of what I referenced with findings by Toyota.....that a portion of thier findings indicated the issue was not actually a stuck open electronic throttle, but rather the floor matt jamming the gas peddle. My connection was not articulated, but I was relating the two in those terms. I did mention this would have happened regardless of drive by wire or cable throttle. Get your point none the less.

Yes, again these are the factory Infiniti all-weather matts. They have the holes. I keep putting the matt into the hole, but essentually, I'm 6'2" and a big guy, so when I get in and out, I find I push toward the front of the car with my right foot. I imagine this subsequently pushed the matt forward and out of the hook.

I'm going to work on fixing that somehow....I'm thinking something along the line of cutting a small washer into a "C" shape that will just barely fit onto the hook. Since the hook expands at the top, with the washer in place below it, the matt should stay in place.

Meh... Just stab at the top of the gas pedal with your toe. And secure your floormat. I had some cheapo aftermarket floormats that did this. Got quite good at getting the pedal unstuck until I got sick of it and jettisoned the damned things.

BTW I'm now using the factory all weathers and have yet to have an issue. Just be sure to secure it on that hook.

I have been having this problem also with my WeatherTech mats. The only difference is that it is my clutch pedal that seems to just barely catch the mat for a moment. The mats don't have any holes for the hook so I might have to put one in.

Ahh .. I didn't know that about Toyota regarding the mat deal. So you're right.

And no, Nissan doesn't have this feature that cuts fuel. Maybe newer ones but not ours.

What's funner then a stuck gas peddle is when a tennis ball rolls from under the drivers seat and jams under the brake pedal. That will make you pucker up real quick.

I was messin' with my intake on my 4th gen once, and on my way to work, I stepped on it, and it the linkage got caught and stuck open since I oriented the intake piping a bit, that wasn't cool.
