I forgot to install a piece during fuel filter change ...

I forgot to install this rubber piece that sits on the bottom of the fuel pump assembly. The car is running great after replacing the fuel filter, pcv valve, and spark plugs. Should I be worried?

I'm trying to even remember what that is. Don't recall it on my 5.5. NOT hard to just pull all back apart and plug it back in. If you've already filled up your tank, I imagine it can wait until your close to empty......that's a safety issue if you don't wait.

I bet you're looking at 30 minutes tops to put that back in. IIRC, altogether it took me about an hour or less to pull the fuel pump, replace the filter, and re-install.

For both 5 and 5.5. But the design is different between the two. One big difference as I recall is that the 5 gen has a return line and some other differences on the pump and filter. Shift_ice's site outlines these differences as I recall.

Forget the part, I predict by your short lifeline that you're not going to make it to the end of the month regardless...enjoy the short life you have left...

This rubber stop sits on the bottom of the lower half of the fuel pump assembly. I think is to prevent damage to the upper half if it ever bottoms out (remember it also has 2 springs). I think there are 3 or 4 of these rubber stops. I know it won't take me long to install it back, but I'm pretty sure I have to get another gasket for the access plate.

Thanks for all the responses!!

You should NOT have to get another gasket.....it's rubber. Did you damage it?

I replaced it with a new one because I was told that it expands after removing it.

I was missing one of those and can't find it any where. I believe its not for the upper portion of the fuel pump assembly but its for the fuel filter to rest on. Probably so that the fuel strainer on the bottom of the pump isn't crushed on the bottom of the assembly.

You are right ... I completely forgot about the fuel strainer screen that sits on the bottom of the pump. I'll be reinstalling it this upcoming weekend. I'm hearing a slight buzzing noise somewhere and I'm thinking that is rubber piece might be affecting the actual fuel flow.

BTW ... I talked to DaveB yesterday and I don't need to get a new O-Ring. The O-ring expanding issue happens when it's really old (the factory original one).
