Merlot AE is bye-bye...hello sterling 02

Guys,

Wanted to let you all know I just traded my 01 SE AE for an 02 SE. I know, most have reacted in shock, but I tell you, this 02 is a different car. Those of you that have gone from an 00 or an 01 to an 02 know what I mean. Because my SE was early production (september), I didn't have the HLSD option, but don't know that I miss it much. My 01 AE had VLSD and I can't detect much, if any, variance in the handling characterics, other than better. If you are thinking 02 and can hold out for the HLSD, be interesting to see what you think.

This baby is Sterling Mist; and it was in the car show circuit here in Tennessee, actually (so if you are from this area and went to the Nashville show, you saw it for sure). It is loaded up: 6 speed (of course), Nav, leather, heated seats/mirrors/wheel, 6 cd changer, etc. Of course I brought my mods over from my 01- Pop Charger, Strut Bar, clear corners, and hood cover. The car has exceeded my expectations. Honestly, when I went to test drive it, I had no idea the difference in ride and handling and overall ridgity of the car I would experience. It made my 01 AE feel like a station wagon when I got back into it. I was stunned. And the 01 AE is a fine car!

So, tell me I'm crazy, but I did get $21 for my 01 (paid $27). Took a pretty good hit, but better than "blue book" would tell you you should get. KBB states somewhere between $18 & 19k is the going rate; and I had almost 19k miles on mine.

Anyway, I've been kind of out of the loop on the forum but wanted to share the good news. About the only thing I miss about the AE is the body kit...but that can be remedied in time (grin)!

Isnt' the sterling mist an awesome color?! I was hung up on my merlot, but I tell you what, this car looks sharp in the silver. Anyway, my interior is black leather. Oh, that is the other thing I miss about the AE...the perforated leather!

How many miles on yours? Also, mine has a slight pull to the right that it will go in for on Thursday, did you experience anything like that? I saw a thread or two a few days ago where some 02 owners had complained about pulls to the right.

Did you have a Max before you got into the 02, or is this your 1st? What do you think?

So, I am going to go back and talk find the threads where you posted on this topic...and rub them in your face. Just kidding. Glad you got what you wanted. Too bad you have to deal with that "mismatched cluster of flashlights" in your headlamp assembly.

Oh! Thanks!

Do we have any breakdown on specific numbers within the 10,000...colors, options, etc.

Search, search, search. This conversation has been had several times...regarding colors (mostly around the Majestic Blue) and regarding 5-speed vs. automatic. I think the general result was that there are no specific numbers available, but there were a lot of theories.

I could not do it

I've driven the '02 SE. It's not worth that kind of loss. You lost $6000 for a year's worth of ownership. That is too much of a loss for me. I would have kept the AE and waited for the 6th gen. It just does not make financial sense to trade for a new car every year.

yeah, i agree.. you're basically paying over $35K for the 02 maxima and "rented" out the 01 for $6K.

but some people just want the latest and the greatest, no matter how much the cost, IMHO.

Thats true...I wouldn't take such a big hit like that. The funny thing is the AE edition has depreciated a whole lot. I thought the AE was a waste of money. A 2001 AE and 2001 GLE books out about the same, if not the GLE is worth a couple hundred bucks more than the AE. Maxxman, congrats on your maxima! I have a '00 Sterling mist GLE and everybody compliments me on the color. I think Sterling mist is by far the best looking color on a max. I am trading in my GLE for a '02 SE with all the bells and the whistles next year and I am 95% positive I might get the same color. What do you think? Time to change color?

Yeah, it probably doesn't make sense to some of you why I would own a car for a year and get out of it. But what makes less sense is continuing to pay on it another 4 years knowing that it lacks features that I wanted (and should have held out for to start with) and would end up trading, anyway. The way I see it, I've saved more money over the long term, and cut my losses early. I have no intent of getting out of this car, as it meets and exceeds my expecations. Heck, it has more on it than our 93 Lexus LS400(see, I do keep my cars). And I'm not particularly interested in the 6th gen based on what I read. This 5th is an awesome design and will look fresh for years to come.

I'm waiting...

For a response to that "mismatched collection of flashlights" comment. I remember you posting that when I was asking about the 2K2 headlight assembly in comparison to the AE's. You want to swap out your HIDs for my AE assembly?

Uh, I think I am the one who made that comment so you might not get a response from Maxmann...

Well, I'll be. You're right...I'm wrong. He made the comment:

"But I still like the sinister look of the bronzed AE lights...wouldn't trade 'em for the 02 even if they were free."

Well, I might consider the trade if Scott is up for it.

well, yeah, but do you ever say things like that to try and talk yourself out of doing something. That's sort of what I was doing, even then. I do still prefer the bronzed look of the AE, that much IS true, but the new HID's are growing on me; my only grievance is with the amber bulb and the fact the the high beams are like a standard light. Besides, I traded up less for the exterior goodies and more for the interior. I miss the body kit, but that can be added. I have everything on this new car. No need to look elsewhere, so long as the thing is reliable and I don't have problems with the new engine, transmission, etc.

And no, I won't be interested in a trade of any "parts" unless you want the stock door sills that I'm pulling out to put in the AE sills (grin).

So, if anyone wants a "rare" 5 speed AE, I know where you can find one!!!

The AE kit will not fit the 02's. BTW nice choice of color and such, I also just bought a 6spd sterling mist a few weeks ago . I added the AE door sills and pedals, they look great.

Well I am buying my car this week and I'll be getting 3.9% and the $500.00 incentive Nissan is offering. I don't know what color to get. I have a sterling mist and I don't know if I should get the same thing again? I am thinking of gray lustre w/ black leather and navi.

What color is your interior? What color trim is on the door sills you got? I ordered them, and mine are greyish/beige, etc. I expected black? Did you install the accelerator pedal yourself???

Hey, Maxman, yes i agree with u completely, sterling mist is the nicest color IMHO. My 2K2 has only 600 miles, looking forward to 1K so i can have at least a little fun. No i havent had any problems with a pull to the right. I use to have a 97 SE five speed, but this car is total overkill compared to the 4rth gen, 5th gen is ton more car, much more substantial. Im looking to add aftermarket leather, do you know many Max owners who have done this and are they satisfied? How many miles on your max? GSD

I think I replied to your email, my interior is black and I ordered/have black AE door sills. I installed my pedals myself of course, can't get much easier then that. However the gas lever{thing that holds the pedal} is totaly different for 02 because of the new electric throttle body cable. I had to remove the the pedal from my AE lever and then remove the pedal from my oem lever. Then I installed just the pedal on my oem lever. If photopoint worked I would post a pic a two, darn..

Thanks, I did get your email; Courtesy already contacted me and they acknowledged they got the order wrong. I knew that couldn't be right, and I did select for the black interior. Good to hear how you worked around the pedals! You only get those on the 02 with HLSD. I may just have to go with those, now, too!!
