Water Pump

Does the water pump on a 2001 run of the same belt as the alternator or is it on a separate belt?

Water pumps in VQs are not run off the belts like the other accessories. It is inside the timing cover. Water pumps on maximas are not for the weekend wrench turner with the $20 tool set from advance auto.

Water pump is driven by the timing chain. It is something you can tackle, if you are pretty handy with tools and have a basic set of metric wrenches and sockets, along with plenty of patience. There is a water pump cover and a chain tensioner cover on the timing chain cover. But you have to be extremelly careful not to drop anything in there.

yeah if youre handy you can do it yourself, however if you drop something in the case, it can cause big trouble...that said, if youre not comfortable then you should just bring it to a shop...if your car has over 120k on it, then tell the shop to get a refurbished unit..should cost around 400-500 bucks to replace...
