Going to be a good holiday. Close on my house on the ~25th
As many of you know i just wrapped up a year in Afghanistan. Ive been in the army for 17.6 years and have been working on an assignment in the Maryland area to rest my weary bones, utilize my clearance, and retire.
My prayers were answered after four years of hell in Fort Lewis, WA with the 5th Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division (Now reflagged as the 2nd Brigade **Google us lol...horrible**)...As stated previously we've worked an assignment to Fort Meade which puts us close to Baltimore. With this move it puts us about thirty minutes from my father. He has been hitting the streets faithfully and in just over two weeks he has found the home we are purchasing and hopefully closing on by Christmas (Which will qualify me for the first time homebuyers $8000 credit since I was deployed )
Needless to say it will be in Upper Marlboro and were getting what i feel is a great deal on it. 4 bedrooms upstairs, master suite has a sitting room, jacuzzi tub and dual headed enclosed shower, fully finished basement with a 5th bedroom and full bath, and the main selling point for me a 2 car garage to keep the max and old school out of the elements and to protect my tools
Im ecstatic and Ill be receiving my final papers on thursday taking them to JAG to overview, but is there anything that I should ask to be written in that you all can think of? Again this is my first home purchase and although Im wide eyed and ecstatic I would like to know if there is anyone thats experienced anything they wish they could have done better in their purchases. Thanks in advance, and I just had to share CANNOT WAIT TO HAVE MY FIRST MD MAX MEET BBQ this summer.
o...and as an afterthought

Congrats ... I'm in the process of buying a house too. I should be closing by Dec. 20th.
One thing I would recommend you is to verify that you are not going to get penalized if you pay your house early. Some banks can pull this trick on you.
I'm assuming that the home inspection has been completed ... how did it go?

I cheated.I'm still in wa so I've had my father do everything through power of attorney. We've purchased two homes from them previously and it turned out to be the same model my father had previously...I was warned about that yesterday and planned to ask if we can pay to principal without penalty. Good luck on yours as well.

Nice House! Today's mortgage rates are amazing... I just locked in a 3.85% refinance on a 15yr loan. Happy, happy, happy.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a house with a 3rd garage for the toy. As it is, my DD has to be my toy. You too, it seems.

I'll give you a quick tip on paying down the principal faster in the begining of your loan.
Look on your morgage statements, the principal is going to be very small, depending on your loan as little as $100 bucks/month. Simply send an overpayment in the amount of the principle every month (~$100) put a note to apply that overpayment to the principle and you'll wind up paying down the morgage in 1/2 the time!!! (2 principal payments with only 1 month of interest) Naturally as the loan gets older, the principal will start to get higher. But your savings in the begining are HUGE if you follow that simple yet very inexpensive payment plan.
Good luck with your new home!

being military we get a housing allowance. that housing allowance is covering about 85% of my mortgage monthly now. I plan to stay active until they attempt to move me then retire in place and just start the everyday hustle, at which point my retirement will cover 90% of the payment.
at that point i begin looking to use my ts overseas and if i can net with the company ive been eyeing should be able to make considerable advances towards getting it paid off sooner.
