2002 Maxima SE auto trans

Been trying to get to the bottom of this for months and it's time to post something. Tried searching but did not really find anything worth reading.

I been seeing my RPM needle sort of wobble between gear changes, for example going from 1 to 2, the needle will wobble just a bit before starting to climb again. And this is depending on how aggressive I get with the accelerator.

I also been dealing with a bit of what I'd label trans/torque converter bounce. If I'm accelerating pretty hard and lift off the accelerator for a second or two, when I press the accelerator again I feel a light shock coming from the transmission/engine or perhaps torque converter (I've really got no idea).

Anyone seen this before and know what part(s) might stop this?

Thanks!

Hi there, I have a 2000 maxima with 130kms on and I also notice it as well( the bounce) this is really the first automatic vehicle I have owned so don't exactly quote me on this one but from owning lots of standard cars. When in gear at higher rpms (and not having the at kick you up a gear when you take your foot off the gas) and re aplly the gas you can feel a "bounce" I think what you are feeling is acually a "kickback" the tranny is under a bit of "load" while cruising which will kick your motor towards the front of the vehicle and when your re apllying the gas the motor is kicked back creating a "bounce" like I said I'm not sure that is what is wrong with you vehicle but that would be my bet, as far as I know the 5th gen maximas have liquid filled mounts, I don't know what the aftermarket options are for motor/tranny mounts but you might be able to have some solid urathane? Motor/tranny mounts or you can get your mounts looked at on your vehicle they may have split (or being liquid filled that change depending on driving conditions could have simply worn out.

Good luck!

I had this is my truck(my last vehicle), although not FWD(wrong wheel drive) and its pretty much what he said in the post above, When you let off, you wheels torque the engine through the half shafts towards the front of the car as you glide/decelerate, then when you get back on the throttle, the engine torques the wheels causing it to rotate toward the rear of the vehicle. Its probably more noticable because you have blown torque motor mounts. Also its more noticeable when you do it from a decelerating coast because the engine is slightly more torqued toward the front of the car, giving it more distance to travel when you get it and it goes to torque it the same way. Hope that wasnt too confusing, if i could draw a picture it would make sense. As for the tach "wobbling" try do describe it a bit better, does it go straight down without going back up again untill the shift is complete? or does it start to go down a little, then hold, or go back up, then go down again, then when the shift is complete it goes back up? Can you film it?

The RPM needle will sort of wiggle if I get heavy on the accelerator after the transmission upshifts, going 1-2 or even 2-3.

I guess I could try to grab a video and see it that comes out at all.

its hard to say without physically seeing or driving the car if you could safley mount the camera somewhere while you drive( safley) it would probably help
how much is it wobbling??? lots, a little, every gear, hard acceleration, soft acceleration at certain rpms???

It's a very slight needle wobble and mostly under hard acceleration. I didn't really pay much attention to it. After the shift to the higher gear, the needle will drop down to the RPM but the needle will wobble maybe twice at the most (back then forth) while still climbing in RPM.

I'll have to wait for my time off this week and get a daylight video.
