2002 Maxima SE totaled. Question about value
2002 Maxima SE totaled. Question about value
My mom recently wrecked her 2002 Maxima SE (Icy roads, panicked driver, guard-rail...).
The guy that towed the car thinks he could get us $500 for the car. Just wondering if you guys think we could get more for it? Or possibly sell parts ourselves?
Thanks for any help.

if those door handles are silver mist I'll take 'em. I HATE my chromed door handles!! I'll take the fogs too if you decide to part it out. Hmmmm, I see a multitude of things I can use!!! lol
Not sure if my dad is willing to take the time to part out, plus the effort to find buyers and ship. If estimated overall value is significantly higher than $500, I'd consider parting out
depending on the mileage the motor and trans alone are worth probably well over a grand. The air bags didn't delpoy? Bucks there too......... the car really doesn't outwardly appear to be hurt badly. Might be worth scrounging parts over the winter and fixing it back as a driver. If it was mine and the frame't not hurt I'd fix it.
^are you serious? to fix that rear quarter panel itself requires cutting and welding in a new/used quarter panel = big money on top of repairing the front and painting. i'm sure the airbags did deploy, BUT if they didnt i agree there's money in that..but you may wana throw that on ebay and let it sit, chances of it selling on here are slim.
at the end of the day..you can keep the car...takes pics of the general inside and outside and throw it on here and have a part out thread..

Yeah - if the guy who towed it says he can get YOU $500, then there's at LEAST $1000 in the car - if you get my drift.
A scrap yard will only pay you a small % of what they THINK they can get out of the car once they part it.
It's up to you and your dad, to decide if you have the time and tools to do what's needed to get any money out of that car at this point.
But there is DEFINITELY more than $500 sittin' there.
good luck.
Tell your parents to PAY for the FULL COverage next time.
**Btw: looks like "MOM" had some aftermarket wheels on HER car, eh, Jr.???

lol he hasnt even decided what to do yet
Easily $6000 worth of body damage there, unless you own a body shop, not worth messing with. But you probably have $2000 worth of parts you can unload if you have the time and patience to do it, maybe more.
Really amazing the amount of idiots in here trying to be vultures and pick up parts when the man simply asked a question about the value of the car...
Yes, that car is worth more than $500. Don't let the moron who towed it try to take you for a ride. Best thing to do? Go make a part out thread in the classifieds. Establish what is and is not salvageable and let everybody go crazy. Find a free weekend and get some garage space, grab a mechanically-inclined friend, a toolbox, a few beers, and pull all the parts off.
How much you make depends on how patient you are. Let the thread go for a while so a good amount of parts get taken up and you could be looking at a grand or two. After that's done with, take the stripped-down car back to the tow man and tell him you want $500 for it.

when Deckdout2 and I parted out the car I posted on craigslist for someone to come pick up the frame for free. I had calls almost immediately and it was gone that evening.
Worth about $1500 in parts - but you will have to hassle with shipping, dealing with flakers (people that claim they will buy but then you will never hear fro mtehm again), and other time consuming crap. It's your call. Tell the tow truck driver to give you a $1000 for it and see what he says.
Recently on a local forum, someone posted a 2002 auto with 100k on engine & 230k on the body with nothing wrong other than some rear fender rust for $2000 canadian - needless to say it sold pretty fast.

First you said
Then you say.
Well yeah, this isn't a part-out thread. I'm not saying that parting out the car is bad, it's really the best thing to do in this situation to get the most out of the car. He's still at the first step of the process of figuring out what to do and he came here to ask for help with that. All these morons saw were images of a wrecked Maxima and they started hounding him for parts.
When he gets everything together and (if he) decides to make a part-out thread, then everybody can start doing that.
It's like a chicken on the side of the road is about to wander in the middle of busy traffic and all these people are already thinking about how it's best-cooked for dinner. The chicken hasn't decided if it's going to wander into the road yet or not.

Thanks for all the responses. Going to see if the guy will up his offer, and if not, we'll part the car.
Once I get the chance to go home (probably xmas at the earliest), I'll start to strip the car and I'll create a post on classifieds. Preference to those who are willing to help me remove the part from the car.
