Have you re-greased your starter?
On the 4th-Gen forums, it is a pretty common procedure, since all of them seem to fail at some point. I have not read anything in the 5th Gen forums to that effect.
Have any of you removed and re-greased your starter? My understanding is that the grease "drying up" in the starter is what causes them to fail.

well not only that but the brushes wear out.
i regreased my starter but in my turbo Sentra , it lasts awhile longer but the best way to rebuild while its out is to replace the brushes, those are what get worn out.
I bought a starter from AutoZone for the lifetime warranty so i wouldnt have to do it on my Maxima

Starter is basically good for the life of the car. The grease assuring the good sliding of the solenoid piston has a shorter life. I have had many starters over the years to fail on my different cars. Every time I have been successfully reviving them for another 50 000 miles or more by re-greassing them and refreshing the contact points.
Never seen brushes worned beyond re-usability point.
Silicone or di-electric grease works best.
