stops going after 4500 rpm

This is for my little brother, he has a 2003 maxima 6spd with 152,xxx miles on it. I was in the car with him yesterday and he went to go rip it and i notice when he was in 4th or 5th gear and he reached about 4500 to 5000 rpms he would keep steping on the gas but the car wouldn't accelerate at all it would stay where it was. What is the cause of this? Also he had bought this car not to long ago and the owner before him always used premium gas and now my brother puts in regular unleaded and now he is getting a rattle noise. But there is NO codes or CEL on. It is around 1500 to 2000 rpms like going over speed bumps and just tapping the gas when it is in neutral is when you can really here it. Does the rattling have something to do with that? Also he is looking to do a tune up he has done the plugs and cleaned the air filter, what else should he do. Thanks org members for your help. Just wanted to add he also has a y pipe don't know if that would have something to do with it as well

I'm no mechanic and neither am I very experienced Maxima owner, but I'm going to go ahead and say: throw some premium fuel in there like the car is meant to run and try it again. Poor acceleration + "rattle noise" to me implies knock, which would likely be solved by running higher octane fuel.

There is a reason why in the owners manual states that these cars run on premium fuel so don't be putting any more gas in there that is not at least 91 octane, you should pickup a can SeaFoam and put the whole can into your next fill up with premium 91 gas to clean all the fuel injectors ... do this first to clean up things inside the engine and then work on the resolve for the rpm issue you may even be surprised that both issue have some relationship to the crappy fuel your feeding your Max.

For best results just add the whole can of seafoam into the gas tank and fill it up with premium gas?

If it is that seriously in need of cleaning, put 2 cans in a full tank or put 1 can in a 1/2 tank. That's how all the outboard guys to it; double the normal "maintenance" dosage for "fix it" issues.
