Steering Wheel controls (trip button)

I have replaced the factory head unit with the alpine W205 double din. By doing this i lost my steering wheel controls. PAC (pacific accessory company) make an adaptor for this. Has anyone tried this? Does it work?

Also, and my main issue with this, Is i lost my Trip button on the steering wheel quit working also. Is this normal? My buddy who owns the electronics shop said it would be stupid if they ran the button through the factory headunit.... Has anyone else ran into this issue?

Thanks to any help you guys can offer.

If you want your controls to work, you need to use the adaptor.

If you want the trip computer to work there is a brown wire that needs to be grounded on the back of the HU.

If you want just the trip button to work I believe all you need to do is ground a wire behind the head unit. I can't remember which one... I'm sure someone who knows will come along.

Awesome. Thank you guys so much. Ill try it this weekend and see if that works. My friends can get me that pac swi jack at cost through his shop. I just wanted to know what experience people have had with that adapter. I was told it operates by infrared and if something is in the way it won't work.

Yea juuuust went through this. On the smaller harness that connected to the bottom of the HU with 4 wires coming out of it you will need to ground out the brown wire with the white stripe on it. Use a chassis ground for it I found the harness ground to be rather worthless.

As for the steering wheel controls I wholly endorse the Axxes auto controller.

Once I got the ground thing figured out it was able to figure out what car it was in and automatically programmed itself.

The direct connection to the stereo eliminates the need for an infrared emitter, allowing the interface to function even in bright sunlight.

^Quote from the link VQPOWER sent you.

I have not used this either, but would be interested in any reviews or a write up... I will be looking into getting this soon after I get a Double din screen.

Buyers beware, local pick up recommended. Slow to ship out items already paid for.

that only works on certain headunits tho..if yours doesnt have that option I have an infared one with brand new wire harness and resistors. Let me know

but yea the trip computer is run thru the factory headunit. I didnt know it was just a wire. I took the whole lower circuitboard the plug was attached to out of the stereo and kept it in the car.

I appreciate the offer and all the help on this but like I posted in the audio section. Some low life sob smashed out my window last nite and stole the headunit anyway. Got the amp and few other things. Its enough to make it a class D felony. Which is good for 2-12 years in fed pen and up to $5000 fine. I'm pushin for the maximum. Lol

So I just got an 02 and yep having the same issue. Luckily, I found this post. I went on to Crutchfield to determine compatibility and sure enough it says incompatible. Is this where the manual programming comes in handy or it just won't work?

I have a pac swi-x universal that I use with an alpine HU. It works great. You have to solder a couple resisters in a couple wires. You also have to program the buttons but that can be nice if you want to change their function. It is a direct connection so you don't have to worry about LED's or line of sight.
