check engine light has a "faint glow", any ideas?

Im looking to buy 2002 maxima GLE today and car looks drives great , but there it very faint glow coming from behind the check engine light. it is not fully on like the seatbelt light but it is something I am definitely something I am concerned about. they are going to run an obd scan b4 I purchase but if it doesn't pull any codes should I be worried about it being some other issue? anyone have any experience like this?

Did you install any new LEDs or any new lights on the car? I remember after installing LED lights on my doors my check engine light would have a faint glow.

I'd be more worried about an actual inspection of the car's mechanical condition, but always pull codes, and if there are none, then you have one less thing to worry about.

It was a know problem with 02 maximas. When I brought mine new in 02 the dim light check engine light was showing at night. I took to dealer and the knew exactly what the problem was. Some gauge clusters on 02 maximas are defective and they replaced my gauge cluster and problem was solved. Don't buy it unless the replace the gauge cluster because its very expensive. Mine was done under warranty but if I had to pay it would have cost me 800.00. Its harmless if you just wanna not have it fix.

Mine does the same thing. Nothing wrong with it. Very faint glow from the other lights in the guage cluster. Has nothing to do with the actual check engine bulb.

Even if the dealer doesn't want to replace the cluster as long as the car is sound go ahead and buy it anyway. Mine has this defect and it's a non-issue for me. I recall seeing a TSB on the issue but now I can't find it.

I agree. When I bought a new '03 years ago, the same thing happened to me. It will not throw a code at all. It was something bad with the instrument cluster and the nissan stealer replaced it under warranty and re-calibrated the new odometer with the same miles as the old one. Good luck.

thanks a LOT. i actually didn't see most of these posts until after i purchased the car. i was right next to the mechanic (w/out the salesman nearby) and every single system check came back w/out any codes. i guess i'll just live with it, as long as it comes on solid when there really is an issue. anyway, didn't get a steal on the car as i usually do, but i was very picky about color/factory options, etc. so i am happy and hope she will serve me well to 200k+ like my '96 did. look forward to becoming an active member of the community and already have a short term to do list (oem spoiler, mile-range starter, tint). probably bigger plans later on as i am a recovering modaholic.

I'm thinking you take a small piece of duck tape and fix er up that way. Outta sight, no worries!

Plus this will give the car character and that lived in practical flair everyone needs

My 2k2 does this too; i figured that if there truly was an SES light then it would light up bright just like any other light on the gauge cluster. I'm glad you posted this because mine has been doing this for a some time and i was skeptical and didnt realize it was a defect with the gauge cluster. I'm currently at around 81K.

I wouldnt worry. My 03 does the same thing. Not all the time but once in a while it has a faint glow. I assume it is from the other dash lights creeping in. Mine has no codes as well
