Finally back!!!

Hey all,

Just bought a 2000 GLE this afternoon and I am soo excited! I used to own a 96 GXE with a few mods and started to miss it as soon as I sold it. It is black with grey interior fully loaded. No spoiler and kind of lame stock wheels lol. But it is definatley a max!

I have a few questions for you guys here,

1. the car smells of coolant after an hour plus drive, I don't see any leaks so I will have to check tomorrow morning to see if I can find anything... Any suggestions?

2. The key fob is not working, could be the battery or something else I am not sure. Does anyone have a link to sync it up with the car incase that is the problem?

3. Is there anything I should be looking for on this particular year or model?

I love these cars! I really wanted a 2002-2003 but I couldnt find one with less than 160k in my price range. This car has just under 120k. new tires and brake rotors and pads. Everything else seems to be in great shape from what I can tell so far.

LOL thanks! I am loving it man, I like it a lot more than my 4th gen I had. It being fully loaded probably helps I had a GXE before.

no leaks anywhere and you smell coolant? is your car smoking? have you changed your oil yet? what does the oil look like and do you see coolant leaking right in front of the oil pan?

I see no leaks, and I havent smelled it again since that first trip. We have driven about 300 miles with no smell... I have checked the oil and it is new, doesn't smell odd just like oil.

Oh also the coolant fluid level was above what it was supposed to be in the reservoir but I removed the excess. Would that cause anything to happen?

Yes. Two things come to mind.

1. Previous owner/dealer overfilled coolant and spilled in engine bay or
2. Previous owner/dealer overfilled coolant, engine heated to normal operating temps causing radiator to push excess fluid to reservoir overflow and it leaked out.

Ditto

If some spilled in the engine bay when they filled (maybe overfilled) the reservoir it would spell for a bit until thjings burned off.

Keep an eye on teh level daily and it it doesn't change after a few weeks of daily driving you are probably good.

Congrats.

1. After driving the car and smelling coolant park it and wait until the car is cool before looking for your leak. On my 2002 I had a coolant tube that had a gasket fail causing coolant leakage. When I would look for the leak when the engine was hot I could never find it. This was because the coolant was evaporating before it could pool. But after allowing the car to sit overnight before inspecting it I was able to find the leak and got it fixed.

2. Yes, be sure it has a new battery and if you can try to get a second key fob before programming.

1. Close and lock all doors with the driver’s side power lock/unlock switch.

2. Insert key into ignition and remove it from the ignition key cylinder at least six times within 10 seconds. Your Hazard
Lamps will flash if you have performed this step successfully. NOTE: Withdraw key completely from ignition cylinder
each time. If this procedure is performed too fast, system will not enter programming mode.

3. Insert key into the ignition cylinder and turn to the ACC position.

4. Within 5 seconds, push ANY button on the remote transmitter. Your Hazard Lamps should flash. NOTE: Do not press
the button more than one time in the above step. If the button is pressed more than one time, the programming
procedure will not be successful.

5. If there are any remaining transmitters (including the old ones), unlock then lock all doors using the driver’s side
power lock/unlock switch and within 5 seconds, push ANY button on the next remote. Your Hazard Lamps should
flash. Repeat this step for each transmitter (including any existing transmitters).

6. Turn the key to the OFF position, remove keys from the ignition, unlock doors using the driver’s side power lock/unlock switch and open the driver side door.
3. There are a couple of things I am aware of, namely if the transmission starts acting wonky remove and clean the speed sensor before going in for a new tranny. The stock coil packs weren't the best but at your mileage they should have been replaced by the time you bought the car. If your electric motor mounts are leaking pull the plugs on them. Eventually one of them will fry the ecu. IACVs tend to be a bit on the touchy side.

I had a leaking radiator cap once in my Max. I could always smell antifreeze when getting out, but car never overheated nor showed signs of any leak. There was this stupid sticker covering the caps little internal valve that was hiding the evidence. Good luck.

Hate to be such a newb but what is an electric motor mount?

And as far as the IACV do you mean it needs to be cleaned frequently? I cleaned mine once in my 96 at about 135k miles, it wasn't super dirty but I had it off and cleaned it out anyways.

Ok search did me well lol. So do I need to rev it up past 1000 rmps before I unplug them? Also is there a way to tell if they are bad, I would hate to unplug a working mount lol.

I really want to get some different rims and possible a spoiler for it. The tires a brand new, will the 16 inch 5 spokes have the same sized tire if I can find some at a good price?

On the IACV from what I understand they tend to fail. I don't know how frequently since I don't open up the threads that often. I have an 02 which doesn't have an IACV.

As for the motor mounts, get underneath the car and take a close look at the rubber part of the mounts. If they are dry you should be ok, if there is a fluid trailing down unplug them. As for the 1K RPM thing, I haven't heard of that before.

Where is the speed sensor located on the Tranny? Hopefully this weekend I will get chance to check it out.
