Feeling transmission shifting through steering wheel

Is it a normal characteristic of our cars to feel the shifting of the transmission through the steering wheel? The steering wheel feels like its twitching back and forth between shifts on my 2000 GLE. It is particularly noticeable under heavy acceleration. I am also thinking it could be the engine mounts. I am currently on the originals at 135,000 miles.

Any other ideas?

In front-wheel drive vehicles, that is pretty normal.
It's all connected, powertrain and steering system.

Did you have a RWD car previous to this?

No, Ive had the car for awhile now and just started to notice it. I also have an 07 and obviously with the cvt, no shifting is felt through the steering. I kinda figured it would be something to do with the fwd.
