axle question

when i was replacing my driver side axle last week, i noticed a springy ring that was on the inside of the axle right where it would mate to the tranny. i figured i might as well put that on the new axle, and now it has a leak.

when i had my clutch replaced before winter, i had the guy replace both axle seals (since one was bad) and i never noticed any major leaks after that until now.

basically i would like to know if that springy ring was supposed to be on the axle after i pulled it out? or is that for something else? Thanks

You need a new axle seal.

That spring was part of the seal.
