I can hear my a/c compressor making noises not conducive of lasting much longer, and predicting a summer heat hotter than satan's ***** i forsee the need to go ahead and start searching locating one. i've priced one via org vendor...for basically $500...like 20% worth of my car....thats alot

i also saw some on ebay for around $200 which is a great price, but i'm sort of unsure....where is where i need your help. if i need to provide links, let me know

^^ +1...Use local if you can get a warranty on it. Some eBay sellers will offer warranty too, but eBay is eBay.

 

yep nothing beats local stores for certain parts, especially when you have a defect or issue and you can get a replacement in under 30min!

 

Is there a Nissan specific wrecking yard in your area? They might have a low mileage used one. Picked one up for my old Accord at Honda Heaven for $100. Put it in at 255,000 miles, at 280,285 miles when I sold the car, it was still working great. Had everything switched over to R12 too.

 

naw i definitely dont have any good nissan specific junkyards around here. but i will check the local parts stores for this. i thought they would be around the $500 range as well, which is why i didnt even begin to check. ill see what prices they have. thanks fellas

 

I got a new compressor and drier from Autozone for like $325. Then my local mechanic installed both and recharged my system for $200 cash.

 

see...i dont like to hear that $325 price lol...i can handle $200...even $250...but i've spent so much money in repairs/maintenance on this car lately...i'm sure i'm approaching the value of the car in maintenance alone

you should easily be able to do the install yourself.

once done, take it to an AC shop to do he evac and recharge.

you will save yourself another $100!

 

well...my father in law is a/my mechanic..next week itll be at the shop replacing the timing chain tensioner...so since i'm 99% sure the belts will come off...i guess illbe doing this at the same time. ill have my brothers car to drive, so ill have all week to mess w/ this.

trying to figure if i should get the NWP spacer and battle installing that as well since i have to do my rear valve cover *decisions decisions*

I assume you have a 5th gen right? aint too many 3.5s with mileage like ours purring away

 

5th gen...3.0...if i get it...ill do an observation..if i get these spacers i need to get a dremel tool so i can fit it per w/e directions come in the package

OAN: I would like to reiterate what Scottwax said. If you're budget is really tight, buy a decent used one and pay a little more for a really good shop to get the system right the first time.

 

i'm not worried about the shop, its hard to be sure you actually have a good used one or not, thats the problem

The 2K Max compressor is a POS in the first place, so you're actually probably money ahead to go with a rebuilt one from Advance or wherever, with a warranty. Get a drier, too. The drier changes mid-year in 2K, but may be all year on 2K1. I think my (late year) 2K car actually used the drier that Advance listed for the '99 Maxima. I don't remember exactly.

 

Just get rid of the entire AC setup, lose weight + go faster for free

the compressor lasted until 200k so i'm not too upset about it. just tired of throwing money towards maintenance on a car i really dont like

Make sure it's not just the clutch that is bad. It's a little hard to diagnose with the belt on but before you start throwing money around, grab the head of the compressor (Engine off of course) and put it through a few turns. If it's crunchy yes your compressor is toast. If not it's likely your compressor clutch.

 

then if its just the compressor clutch?!....

My A/C compressor clutch has been making a little noise for about 4 years now!
So I know it's definitely the clutch which can't be bought from Nissan separately over he counter but since A/c coompressors are available with or w/o the clutch assy's let's me know clutch assy are available thru possible an A/C compressor rebuilding shop......There's a special removal and installation tool available and I'm sure it's rentable or I can order it from Snap-On or Mac......

 

i cant deal w/ that noise. i like having a quiet engine through and through, and since i know its my compressor (possibly the clutch) ill just replace it. ill keep my old compressor to the side

 

If you are just going to do that, be sure to oil it up and seal the compressor. Due to the oil that is in there it can get grimed up pretty quickly by the dust in the air and the extra oil will keep it from rusting up on you.

ok i have a question...found out that the noise that i thought was from the timing chain tensioner is from the a/c compressor (while the a/c is NOT on)...the pulley is wobbling. my question is...is there a way to tighten it? or a kit of some sort? if so whats the difficulty of fixing it? i mean...buying another compressor is no biggie, but this compressor still blows out artic blast a/c still. so if i dont have to replace/buy another, then thats cool

 

Had the same problem when the A/C was on makes a noise but off nothing one mechanic said need a new one another checked it out and tighten something up and no more sound like hell yeah saved me between 250 and 400 bucks......GOOD LUCK...

 

^sounds epic!!! thanks man. i'm going to be doing work on it this week..ill probably drop it off today and start work on it probably thursday. i think i'm going to tackle the rear vc first, then take off the compressor..seems like the compressor is an easier feat

 

Just for a reference point, I had a noise coming from my A/C compressor around 168K IIRC and it was diagnosed as a bad bearing. Being a higher mileage car I pursued replacing the unit, bought one off ebay, reman'd for 180 shipped to my door. No problems yet and I currently have 196K.

SN:def keep us updated on the NWP spacer install. I'm about to head down the same road, rear V/C gasket and spacers.....possibly headers too, if time permits

 

i wont be doing the NWP spacer install. i think the only thing ill be doing to this car, granted i keep it is a berk intake w/ a JWT pop charger. im pretty much done w/ the performance on this car, and its not like i have much on there anyway. thanks for the heads up on the bearing..thats kind of where my mech and i are headed..he said we'll pull it off and inspect it and see what the deal is. ill probably just replace it

 

I called every where around here looking for a new one for my 2001. Couldn't find squat ! Finally found a place that ordered me one in from Quebec for $167 taxes in. Took the boyfriend all of about 15-20 minutes to install it!
