My gas light doesn't even work and never has worked at any time during my ownership of the car. Wish I knew why. My gas gauge is ALL over the place all the time too.

Sorry for the half answer answering from my cell, soblike i was saying swaped it ou for a new one a nothing, so i purchased a cluster with 10k miles its should get here around tuesday and hopefully that does the trick. That only thing that other members here have pinpointed that the actual gauge becomes faulty.

My gauge has been f"d for 2 years. I just fill up every time and reset the trip. It's great for mileage because I seem to pay attention to my driving habits more. I've been averaging 780-800km (485-500miles) over my last dozen tanks, usually takes 62L(16.5gal)

Before anyone else wastes money on a new sender, there is a test mode for the cluster (below). My wacky '03 gas gauge failed so I know what it is. At 160K I'm not too upset about it.

HOW TO ALTERNATE DIAGNOSIS MODE

1. Turn ignition switch to ON and change odo/trip meter to “TRIP”.
2. Turn ignition switch to OFF.
3. Turn ignition switch to ON when pushing odo/trip meter switch.

4. Release odo/trip meter switch 1 second after ignition switch is
turned ON.
5. Push odo/trip meter switch more than three times within 7
seconds.

6. All odo/trip meter segments should be turned on. Gauges should all go to center position.

Oh god my wires 03 Maxima can't decide on how much fuel it has. Is it 3/4 5/8 or 1/2? Who knows! Reading these threads on this problems get me worried that it's the damn cluster. Hell some people replaced the cluster and still have the problem. At least the fuel pump seems pretty accessible and if worst comes to worst I'll just push it over to the mechanic across the street.

Quote: hey guys my gas gause started acting funky if i fill up i reads correctly onces it gets to 1/4 of a tank it goes up to around half and not move sometime it goes down and reads correctly and sometime it doesnt. what can i do to fix this problem and gettin ready to leave to vegas and i dont want to stay stranded due to lack of gas lol
Bad solder joints inside instrument cluster. Solder all major points including all large square resistors. Do not touch tiny components as you might damage them. This is the fix for roaming gas needle.

Bad solder joints inside cluster. Its an electronics repair job

Loose solder joints inside cluster. Challenging but I fixed mine. Or replace cluster.

Hi all I'm new and joined yesturday because this site is very helpful.
I was having the gas gauge issue for a month and I didn't give up till I found the solution. Its usually not the float or sender should I say. Its the instrument cluster itself. There are bad solder joints in the cluster and with temperature change the gauge sometimes will work intermittently. All major points and large square resistors have to be resoldered. Its a bit tedius splitting the cluster but can be done successfuly. Re calibrating needles after you have to look up the procedure to get them back to spec. Mine works like brand new so I share the info with whoever is electronicly inclined.
