2k2 fuel economy contest
Okay,
All you 2k2 owners out there, whats the best average fuel economy you've achieved according to your ICY?
I'm on my second tank of gas with my 2k2 6 spd and my average right now is 8.2 l/100km, which is approximately 28.7 mpg. Hopefully will go up as I break it in....

Well, hopefully I didn't goof on the conversion. I went to this site: http://www.pege.org/fuel/convert.htm and they have a nifty little converter. It seems about right though.
To answer your question, since I'm breaking her in I generally drive it like a little girl. Easy on the gas, shift at around 2500 to 3000 rpm, make use of 6th gear as much as possible. Even when I'm tooling around at 70 - 80 km/h I keep it in 6th.
Also, my commute to work is about 25 minutes, half of which I spend cruising at 120 km/h and the other half I cruise at 100 km/h. At these speeds, the engine is turning at 2200 rpm and 1800 rpm respectively. Its practically idiling.
I don't sit in traffic, I don't do alot of city driving, I run the climate control in Econ mode 99% of the time.
It doesn't seem that far out of whack with the mileage my wife gets on her 2k 5 spd. When I was driving it, I was generally getting between 550 to 600 km per tank, and it takes something like 55 to 56 litres to fill up, which puts it in the 26 mpg range.
Ironically, I think the 2k2 can get better mileage because of the extra gear despite the bigger motor. 120 km/h in our 2K Max corresponds to 3000 rpm in 5th. 120 km/h in our 2k2 Max corresponds to 2200 rpm in 6th. Same way a Corvette gets like 26 mpg on the highway despite having a 5.7L engine.

my 2k2 has 400 miles on it now, and the mpg dropped to 17.1 mpg from 22.5 when there was only 1000 miles on it [/QUOTE

obvious my mpg is the worse, i don't do alot of hard driving.
i tried 1 tank with easy driving & 1 tank with hard driving, and the results came out to be about the same 17.5 mpg.
do you guys think there is anything wrong with the car(note: the car is NEW, only 2 months old)
I notice the dropping in MPG right after I got my first oil change ( 22.5mpg-17.5mpg)
HELP PLEASE

You guys are not usuing you computer EMG read out's right? My computers off exactly 4 MPG, always. I calculated at the pump a few times and my best MPG to date was 21.9. My worst was 19.8 MPG. I hardly ever drive on the highway so this is to be expected. My 95 maxima averaged about 1-2 MPG more.
I can't believe you guys are getting mileage like that. I have a 2K Automagic with 68K and I get 26.5 to 29 mpg. I drive city / highway mix and NOT like a little girl. I can really tell a difference if I do a lot of city driving with my foot in it all the time v/s all highway driving. I run premium and throw in a bottle of injector cleaner every 5k or so and keep the tire pressure at 33 psi (17" 225/50's) gotta check the tires often - especially in the cold months.
What size gallon is everyone using to convert? It's typical for Americans to convert to US gal, whereas Canadians normally convert to Imperial gallons.
I've got a spreadsheet at http://www.cenpipe.com/~akrusvar/Maxima/maxtracking.xls with my first 18 fill ups. I've got calculations for L/100 km, m/US gal, m/Imp. gal as well as my fuel cost/km.
You can definitely see when I'm on the highway doing about 130 km/h. My everyday driving is about 30 km at ~90 - 100 km/h with only about 4 stops each way. I do let my car warm up a couple of minutes, so I'm waiting for the breakin and spring weather to coincide and I expect at least another 5 m/Imp gal.
All in all, I'm very impressed by the mileage of the car. BTW, I've got a 2k2 6spd.

I'm also located in the NE and have read that the fuel mix is changed for the winter and that this can cause worse fuel economy compared to fuel in southern parts of the country.

All this poor gas mileage.. My 99 gets 28 on the highway at 80 MPH on a long trip. Around town it's about 23/24 mpg. And I'm a righty if ya know what I mean....
I am getting 27-29mpg. Currently getting 27mpg
and thats here in the good old NY winter weather.
I have the 2002 Max GLE auto with 2800 miles.
I have not gotten below 25mpg even since it was new. I drive 90% highway and use only 93 octane
gasoline

Re: 2k2 fuel economy contest
Just took a little trip yesterday and I reached new levels of fuel economy according to the trip computer.
Now I know the trip computer isn't terribly accurate, but its still fun to see how well you can do.
Anyhow, at one point I was down to 7.5 L//100 km (31 mpg) but after making the return trip I was down on my mileage, with the average at 7.8 l/100 km (30 mpg).
I filled up and reset the computer just before we left, so this is all highway cruising.

Well here's my $0.02 driving a 2k2 auto.
Odometer: 1528 miles.
Average temperature: 50 deg. F ambient.
Tire pressure: 33 psi all round.
Gas: Amoco Premium in Illinois (which I believe forces some additives
)
Highway fuel consumption:
20.7 mpg when driving mostly @ 80 mph.
24.34 mpg when driving mostly @ 65 mph.
All measurements made by getting gas at the same pump. Trip computer routinely shows more than these figures!
[Haven't carefully measured city-driving fuel consumption yet. That'll be the next project

I just kicked over 2000 miles on mine and I am averaging between 23 and 26 with normal city driving. This includes the daily highway on-ramp sprint or two that I must lay the pipe for....
I did make a long trip to PA during Christmas and the CPU said I was pulling 31.5 mpg for the duration I was crusing. I was doing about 82 in 6th and loving the mpg.

MPG
Going based on the trip comp. I get ~22.5MPG (1800 miles, US gallons, high test, California gas so it has additives, half traffic/half highway, heavy on the foot when I can be, 50 degrees F., close to sea level, winds 10MPH out of the west, etc.).
MPG
I took a short trip last week, about 200 miles round-trip. (still in break-in period, only about 600 miles at the time) According to the computer I was getting 32 mpg on the way there, did about 15 miles of city driving, and by the time I pulled into my driveway the computer said 30.5 mpg. I thought I had gotten an extra gift from this already terrific car; I could smoke a Mustang and get the gas mileage of a Escort. Then I filled up and calculated -- 26 mpg -- still not bad. I agree that the trip computer is about 4 mpg off. Maybe I should have driven until it was empty, but that is still a pretty big difference.
Over the weekend, I drove 2 hours to Richmond. I reset the trip computer in my driveway, and it took me about 20 minutes to get out of town (to the highways). By the time I reached Richmond, I was showing 31MPG. I was generally cruising 70-80 MPH, with more than a few full-throttle middle-lane passing maneuvers (one which resulted in a speeding ticket
). One the way back (reset again) I got 30MPG.
Travelling to Ohio in January, through the hills of Pennsylvania with a strong headwind, I got 27.5 (that was pretty consistent too).
Around town I've been getting 22-23. Again this is all per the trip computer. I've read some people saying that it's off by around 4MPG -- is that 4 over or 4 under? That's OK though, I like what it's showing me so I'll pretend it's accurate.

I have over 8500 miles on mine now and just last weekend on a trip, at mostly highways speeds (70sih) but it was up and down hills and around some twisty roads (gotta get sway bars) I averaged 20 mpg. The computer said around 23.5. as stated though that was doing some heavy footed drivingaround some twisty roads so a lot of brake and then heavy gas. Not bad I guess but I am still not used to not getting over 33 like I used to with my old econbox hyundai
Cheers

I average between 11 and 13 mpg around town and about 18mpg on the highway at anywhere from 90-140mph. However, the in-town milage consist of my street racing habits.
