Random ABS Light...What to Check?

This is a 2000 Infiniti I30 that I am having problems with.

Saturday I changed all four rotors and brake pads..everything was fine. I drove around town and on the highway with no problems.

Two days before that, i went to Nissan to get the brakes powerflushed....didnt have any problems there either.

This week on Monday I got my new wheels and tires mounted and balanced and put on. Afterward i drove home with no problems. I went to Taco Bell after my girlfriend and friend came over...no problems. Left Taco Bell and was about to get on the highway and the ABS light came on. I drove about 15 miles on the highway and once I turned the car off and back on, the ABS light went off.

When i started driving again, the light was off for a couple of minutes then came back on. More times than not, the light is off for the first few minutes of driving then comes on. I am not braking hard, just normal city driving. When i get on the highway, it always comes on.

I do not have any check engine light. I do not have any problems with my speedometer. The only thing is the ABS light comes on. Where do I start to look? I didnt notice any sensors while doing the brakes. I didnt notice any wires hanging or anything...anyone have any ideas? It would be much appreciated!

Check the ABS sensors, one at each wheel. You need to remove the rotors, they are located behind the rotor in the hub assembly, follow the wire/line that's not a brake line.

there is a self diagnostic procedure in the brakes section of the FSM. it starts on page 48 of the 2000 Maxima manual. Give it a try and see what it tells you.

I agree, usually sensor related. There is a self-diagnostic procedure in the FSM that you can use to pinpoint the affected sensor, if as I guess that is the problem. The sensors are strongly magnetic and one may simply have accumulated loose metal dust/particles. If you are unlucky and need to replace one of the sensors, search before purchasing from Nissan. I replaced a couple on previous Maximas that I had purchased on EBay for a fraction of OEM, and they were excellent.
