Trans Issue

Ok, so I was driving up to Indy a few weeks ago and I noticed while driving that the car began to come out of 6th gear. The trans will not stay in 6th gear unless I am resting my hand on the shifter. And when I have to accelerate in 6th it will come out of gear every time. It is ONLY 6th gear. It goes in fine (seemingly) with no crunch, or noise. It makes no noises when it pops out of gear either. I can physically feel the car trying to pull the shifter out of gear when I roll into the throttle what so ever.

So..I am thinking this is a shift fork issue. Thoughts?

Fwiw, it has always felt like I was pulling through mud when I would shift into 6th gear, but has been getting easier as of late. The rear mount was just replaced (old one was completely torn loose on both sides of the steel insert.

Also, I have not looked at this transmission much..is there a way to access 6th gearset/fork/etc..without having to tear the whole thing down? I know on my Probe the 5th gear is outside the case and I have to just pop the cover off to get to it.

Bump

Does anyone do anything with transmissions on here? Or does everyone just replace them?

You can yank the shifter assembly out and stick a small mirror down the hole to take a look.

With a cable shifter I'd imagine that bad engine mounts wouldn't make it pop out of gear like the good ol' rod ones.

Hrmm.... That's about it from me

OP - I think part of the problem is that you have symptoms and no tests administered. In other words, we don't have any in-depth information from you. Have you looked at all the external components already. The clutch and shifter parts are fairly easy to access. You're going to eventually have to go out and look at it or pay someone to. I will, however, give you a shot-in-the-dark-over-the-interwebz guess. Look closely at your shift cable bracket at the transmission. It could be fractured.

The reason I felt it might have been the motor mount was because the shifter moves, essentially with the gas pedal. The more load the more the shifter moves around and the quicker it comes out of 6th. It is only 6th..

The motor mount was in fact trashed, and has been replaced. It is not the clutch, otherwise it would show signs of an issue in all gears, and also in 5th about as much as 6th, since those are the two higher 'load' gears. The shifter literally bounces around every time I get into or out of the gas pedal in 6th.

AAckshun- the shifter assembly on the trans can come out? I will look at the bracket and such and see if I see anything. But again, I would think that would present an issue with all gears.
