Got my Cattman y-pipe installed today - I like!

My mechanic charged me $150 to do the install. He had to cut all the fastners and replace with nuts and bolts. One hangnail though. The O2 sensor srtipped the stock y-pipe threads on the way out. The old pipe thread material was basically cold welded to half the threads on the sensor. He called me to let me know and suggested to replace it for $140 with an oem sensor. Since the part is almost ten years old, I said go for it. I also had him inspect my motor mounts and some wetting around the steering rack. I drove off for $300 and thought it a fair deal.
I will elaborate on the pipe's performance when I get a few more miles logged.

I remember when I had my 97 Maxima.....when I put the y-pipe on it was a BI difference in performance and that was the 3.0 engine. I dont know if you have 3.0 or the 3.5 but I would imagine the 3.5L gains would be even greater.

The gains are actually less on the 3.5 as both precats remain in place.

Removing a section of exhaust, chipping out the catylist material and re-installing the exhaust(I'm sure there is a how to tread on this...search).

Gutting refers to the pre-cats having the internals removed.

Thanks. You mean the inside of the pre-cat will be made empty? If so, how would you pass the emission test without the cat as it were?

Yes, the insides of the pre-cats would be empty. You pass emmisions because of an O2 simulator wired into the secondaries, or a plug non-fouler extension on the secondaries to alter the sensor readings. This will spoof the ECU. If you're in a state that sniffs, just make sure your car is fully warmed up and your main cat will do all the heavy lifting.

This is where people start banging you on the head telling you to search.

Hey Roc, I got a question for ya... Im in a bit of a pickle, I have my new y-pipe waiting to be installed and was planning on gutting my pre's to compliment it (as I know they were recently removed and shouldn't be to bad to get off). My problem is that who ever replaced the main cat before I got the car, welded it to the stock y and the there's no way I'm cutting or welding anything to my Cattman. So I thought of getting a high flow cat and just bolt up to it.

My question is, with my pre's gutted do you think the hfc will cause me to fail an emissions? I'm in Ontario Canada and I'm sure your not educated on our emissions testing, but if you think the stock main cat would save you when you have the pre's gutted, do you think the hfc would cause a fail?

I really don't know. I assume the high-flow cat functions exactly to specs as the OEM cat, it only does it with more efficient exhaust flow. But I base that on nothing what-so-ever.

That and a cup of coffee...

Thanks. I guess I'm in the know now. Just curious, wondered whether I could do without the cats.
When people starting banging, I knock back telling them this a forum, by asking I'm searching. Answers from searches result from enqueries or adverts, so what's wrong adding mine to the data base?

Damn, sorry you had 02 issues. I was worried about my 02 sensor being stuck but it came out undamaged.

You will like none the less. I think it pulls harder, at all speeds. Highway, I get more pull most deff. I normally don't take off hard on the city streets but I few times I had to pull out quick and compared to before that felt faster to.

For those people that aren't trying to get to far into engine mods. I would say intake, spacer, vias delete and ypipe and be done with it. Then get your suspension upgrade which I'm trying to do. But actually should probably be the first thing you do.

Not a commentary on Lagos, because I know nothing about Nigeria except that it's really far away. Most Org members are in North America, so the occasional far away member is notable and kind of exotic.

I know you asked ROC but I have experience with this...I had a 97 Maxima with a y-pipe...and on the 4th gens the y-pipe deletes the pre-cats...and I bought a high flow cat and I passed emissions test (the sniffing kind too...LOL) every 2 years no problem. But like ROC said...just make sure the car is warmed up.....you'll be fine.

Went for a nice drive today. Weather was great, about 60 degrees and sunny.
I must say that the y-pipe is a great companion to the spacers. With the spacers alone, I felt more pull in the lower rpm range, (such as accelerating in a higher gear without kicking down). With the addition of the pipe, not only do I feel the stronger pull, but much quicker response.
While cruising, it feels like the car just begs for a hit on the throttle. So much more responsive! Oh and it keeps on pulling when I stand on it. When driving @ higher freeway speeds, it doesn't really feel like a stronger pull, but both the tach and speedo say this thing is accelerating very well. Both rpm and speed increase more rapidly than b4.
Not much of a change sound wise, (which I like), a little more rumble @ idle & low rpm.
All in all, I'm happy with the endeavour that started out in March and just came to be. Even though I did get butt raped by UPS for brokerage fees.
