EXHAUST SYSTEM

Alright guys and gals I need advice as to what to install on my 2000 Maxima. My exhaust system is on its kast leg and I can tell it is affecting my engines performance. I am not big on mods on a car but my friends have advised me to buy an aftermarket exhaust system. I have been told they are better and helps the car perform better and i am all for that! So I need suggestions and advice from those who have done this. Thanks in advance!

If you not big on mods then perhaps you should just go back with stock. If you want a little more performance you can get an aftermarket 2.5" exhaust and KEEP the stock muffler...that way you will have no noise. Honestly, though, if you have NO other mods on your car and don't plan on modding it then I would just go back to stock exhaust system. Modding only Catback will give minimal gains.......probably won't even feel it.

It's a knockoff of the actual Greddy. I'm sure you've seen them all over the place on eBay.

i have a custom catback on mine

warpspeed ypipe 22" magnaflow resonator 2.5" piping to a cattman axleback...other than the hole in my ypipe from riding too low, sounds excellent...crazy but i've gotten more compliments on my exhaust w/ the hole in teh ypipe

its tone, not obnoxiously loud, i love it, personally.

Elaborate

OK here is my thoughts on mods....Mods may cause more problems down the line.
Is this Fact or Fiction?
What mods can be performed without breaking the bank and making a aftermarket performance exhaust purchase and install worthwhile?

Fiction.

Ignorance, poor-quality parts, and cutting-corners are what can cause problems down the line. Mods done correctly and responsibly with quality parts only enhance your experience with the car...

...unless the results aren't satisfying, in which case you're screwed.

Seems like, from what I've been reading, for the 3L 5th gen a 2.5" cat back is the best. I think I saw that cattman is offering another build, specifically of 3" but I'm sure you can get a 2.5 in the loop. If you're not going heavy on mods but you're going to upgrade the exhaust, then you may as well at least get an air filter as well, they are inexpensive and a great compliment.

Personally I have purchased an ebay exhaust but sold it NIB for the 3" cattman with a resonator on my 3.5L It's quite at idle and cruising, aggressive sound under load. The ebay unit, once installed was incredibly loud and the owner used the piping with the factory muffler to quite it down. He had a set of OBX headers installed at the time which also added to the sound. But he said it was a horrible note and drone.

If you go to the local shops, then try your best to find a shop that is mandrel bend capable, that will give you the true exhaust flow that you pay for. But I'm sure there are plenty of posts where orgers have had great experience with the systems they have purchased local/custom I'm sure not all were mandrel bent.

Good Luck - Why be you, when you can be NEW!!! (Robots, what a great film) UPGRADES ROCK

2.5" for cattman is better with the 5th gens most gains. 3" better for 5.5 gens

Just get a megan, pretty inexpensive, and not loud at all until you start adding other mods (y-pipe, headers, etc)

And the comment about 3.0's not benefiting from a 3" exhaust is subjective. It's going to depend on having the supporting mods for the 3.0, stock for stock, there are minimal gains if any and the 3.5 benefits greatly, but with I/H/HFC, spacers etc...

I'll add my 2 cents:

1.) There re no definitive results or dynos for the DEK + 3" anything, Cattman or otherwise.
2.) Aftermarket systems are typically far cheaper than OEM, from the factory of course.
3.) No cat-back by itself will make much noise if any at all, since he doesn't even have a y-pipe. All of us should know by now that, stock headers, y-pipe, and cat will quiet anything down, no matter what. I had a straight through tiny muffler, 2.5" catback with no resonator, and it was hardly, i mean HARDLY noticeable on my 4th gen. Save the comments for ZOMG!!111 it's a 4th gen, apples to oranges. I've worked on plenty of 5.0 gens to say, no, in the exhaust department, they're nearly identical.
4.) What were we discussing again?
5.) Oh yeah, OP, if anything, go to your local shop and have them fab you one. I paid 225 for a catback + muffler. Was it mandrel bent, no, is it stainless, no, did I care, no. Should you, probably not.
6.) If you plan on modding, you need to hang out on here and read the many threads on it, it's not for the faint of heart.

To sum it up ....

I have a 2.5" single tip OBX catback with a megan test pipe on my 02. Stock y pipe and precats still in place (for now until the OBX headers are available again) and right now I love the tone. Nice and agressive paired with my berk intake

I'd avoid anything that makes excessive noise just for the sake of making noise.

Unless it adds something substantial to car's performance, I wouldn't bother with a noisy exhaust. Just my two cents.

Not trying to thread jack here, my question goes along with the OP's.

I'm in the market for a new exhaust set; there is current 133xxx miles on the OEM one and I think it's time for a change. I planned on keeping stock headers, but if I need to/should change them, I will, budget permitting. I want something that has a nice deep tone to it at idle but it not overwhelming when cruising. I've done searching and looking around and I can't seem to find everything that I need in one place.

Basically, what I am in need of, is exactly what parts would I need to buy and from what manufacturer in order to accomplish my goal. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

this may help: Mandrel Exhaust Systems <click there

Flowmaster and Flowtech make beautiful sound, but they will destroy your performance since they have more backup pressure than OEM mufflers
