My passenger side front wheel bearing is on its way out just wondering if its a press in unit or can i buy a bolt on hub assembly with the bearing already in it ?

And to anyone that's done this how much of a pita is it?

 

You can do either.

Autozone sells both the pre-assembled hub and the individual bearings.

Pressing out and replacing an old bearing takes about an hour and a half, depending on if you have air tools, etc. You can cut about 30-45 minutes off of your time if you replace the whole hub. That's a bit more expensive, though.

 

I haven't seen any full assemblies.

It's a weird setup. First remove the knuckle from the car. Then you have to take a hammer and some sort of knockout and smack the bearing from behind to knock off the hub. this destroys the bearing. then there is a snap ring which needs to be removed so you can press out the bearing. Then you can press in the new bearing. Then you cut off the collar that is stuck to the hub from the broken bearing. install the new snap ring then press the hub into the bearing. the reassemble.

Or you can go to a wrecker and buy a used knuckle. it will include the abs line and the hub. You can take the knuckle to a shop with the new bearing and get them to do all the work. then just swap the knuckle. Just make sure that the abs type is the same as your car. you can't put an MT abs on an auto or vice versa. And to get the abs out is harder than the rest of the swap. you will destroy the abs in the attempt.

Oem bearings cost a fortune but if you look for the SKF bearing FW60 it will cost you about half. The FW60 is the OEM bearing without the nissan logo on it.

seeing how i can get the oem bearing for 80 or so, i think the hassle of having to take it to a shop to press in/out this might be worth the extra 50bux..

that's fine if you think you need a new hub. I think the OP was hoping to buy a new knuckle with the bearing and hub pressed in.

but you still have to take the knuckle to someone and get it all pressed in and out

I've never seen a full assembly either.

And that Timken can be had for about $60 Canadian, so $130 USD is outrageous. Those are the bearings I have in my car.

 

That link is for a bearing and hub assembly. I found a place that is selling a no-name bearing for $8.34 USD. I don't know about that. Maybe if I was selling my car to my enemy. The timken is $35.43.

Just curious,but how did you know your bearing was going bad? At my manufacturing job I pm injection molding machines and printing equipment, and we get our hands on shafts and bearings and can feel the roughness in the bearing or too much play and know to change. But I'm not sure about the wheel bearing, different setup than I'm used to. You going by feel or sound?

 

i've gotten mine on car-part.com, its under "hub" ... i think i paid around $60 for mine, came from a 2001 i think and works perfectly, and some junk yards will give you a decent warranty too...
as far as work goes, pretty straight forward, ball joint, tie rod, brakes, all off, then just replace the whole knuckle...

Would this be a good buy, if there was $30 off the price? I have a bearing in box but I'm worried about the labor and cost involved, as opposed to swapping out the hub assembly.

 

from what i understand, you still need to get to the knuckle to have the old bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in..

Im going from sound as of now i've had a few go on cars over the years and they all sound the same on the way out and they get louder and louder

 

came today, bigger than i thought it would be. since i have to do rotors and pads, install shouldnt be that much of a PITA minus removing the knuckle and getting it pressed in...
