Here's a topic that you don't see much of: Aftermarket seat belts. The one on my Maxima are worn and ugly, plus the passenger side one isn't working right. I was wondering if it would be possible to install aftermarket/replacement ones on an 00 Maxima? Perhaps something like this?

Also, are there any legality issues to replacing OEM seat belts?

I'm not sure if it's a state or federal law, but street legal seat belts are mostly different from aftermarket ones, which are used for racing. I don't know the exact details of it, but when I used to work at a dealership, we weren't allowed to sell used seat belts or airbags. Basically if they say that they're DOT legal, then you should be good to go. However, most aftermarket seat belt's aren't, so I'd do some more research on it.

Interesting! But the sad part is that a racing belt would probably hold up better then my Maxima's OEM ones (not sure about everyone elses). Looks like I gotta call up the stealership again

Another possibility to check into is Nissan's seat belt warranty. I heard that the 3rd gen's automatic seat belts have a lifetime warranty through Nissan, and I'm not sure if that applies to any other models, but it's worth checking into.

^ Can't install used seat belts on cars because it's a safety issue. Worn seat belts run a higher risk of failure.

Also, I wouldn't install aftermarket belts. I'd stick to OE stuff for safety restraints.

Wouldn't an aftermarket not have the locking restraint system that the Nissan belts do, since that's electronically controlled?

I'm not sure why these seat belts are so worn out. Yes, it's an 11 year old car, but other Maximas I've seen are not as worn. I'm going to call up the dealership and see what they say.

Thanks for your input everyone. It's much appreciated.

If the seatbelt has not been deployed in a crash, it has to be disposed of as "hazardous material". There is an expolsive charge that is used to lock the belt during an accident. There is a section in the RS section of the FSM about it.

I know Honda warranties seat belts for the life of the vehicle.
