Water leaking into the trunk?

I was just outside to put something in the trunk and I noticed that a tool kit that sits close to the trunk opening was extremely damp. I opened it up to find that most of the tools are forming rust. The matting also seems to be wet. I moved everything off to the side to avoid any further damage, but I'd like to know why this is happening. I think the culprit may be the plastic lining thats supposed to hold in the matting. The front part of it has come loose (assuming it was ever adhesed). Has anyone else experienced this problem? Would just super glueing it back together work without damaging it?

To truly find your leak get a friend to hose down the trunk(while its closed) while you climb in through the back seat with a flashlight and see exactly where your problem is. works like a charm...good luck and oh yea don't forget to remove the trunk lining and such from the trunk before doing this

Had the same thing a few months ago, found that the water was leaking in through the tail light opening, put some silicone and no more leaks

+1

I had the same problem after I put in new tail lights. Took them off and ran a bead of silicon and its been dry ever since.

Do you have a spoiler? and was it installed by the factory or was it a dealer installed spoiler. You mentioned your tool bags was near the trunk release which would make me think you possible have a leak where the center support is on the spoiler. I have read in other threads that the dealer installed ones do tend to leak over time.

It's just a GLE, no spoiler.

And thanks everyone, I'll try that this weekend.

99% of the time it's a bad tail light seal. Just get some more butyl on there and you'll be fine.
