Seat Problems--want to swap 02 seats for 01
My father drove an 01 SE 5-speed last year and was seriously considering it. He chose to wait until the 02 came out for the extra power and extra gear. Unfortunately, the 02 cloth seats (he hates leather) are DIFFERENT, and they hurt his back (something about the lumbar support—and he adjusted it as much as he could). So far, he’s driven two 01’s and two 02’s. Both of the 02’s hurt his back after ten minutes, yet he had no problems with either 01.
We checked into changing out the foam inside the seats, but the actual frame is a different part number as well, and the foam swap wouldn’t work. However, the track parts are the same, so I’m thinking that either seat would fit either car. The only problem with that is: 1) the wiring harness may not be the same, and 2) the cost would be crazy for two (01) seats…unless he could find some from a totaled 01.
Any suggestions? I thought about aftermarket seats, but I think the original ones have airbags...and he wouldn’t want to give them up.
I hope there is a solution. He loves the car, but is now considering a TRD Solara S/C. We can’t let this happen!

Try bargaining with the dealer for this custom option. Let him know the reasons and maybe they'll work with you. Or you can buy the stock 2K1 seats from a place like oem-car-parts.com.

Yep, they suck compared to the 2000-2001 seats. The older seats have more support than the newer ones. The newer ones are pure SUV luxury seats, all you do is sit on it, it doesn't hold you well in the seat.
