Even when accelerating real hard when the car in 2nd gear anything over 5000 rpms when I shift to 3rd it fights....then the CRUNCH. SUCKS BAD!!! How much does it cost to rebuild a tranny? I'm strongly considering that......

Hmmm.....not bad.....I might go to a transmission shop and check that out. That crunch crap really takes to fun out of driving the car fast...driving normal it doesnt crunch, but when you start getting on it...CRUNCH!!! Might add that on with the turbo build.

I also suffer from this. It is sooo effin annoying, not to mention the horrific sound it make when your going fast and your trying to switch into 3rd. Do you have the hlsd tranny or the basic one?

HLSD. Went to tranny shop here on the corner. Said it would be $400 to drop the tranny and inspect it...then depends on what is needed would be the cost. I'm going to do it. I really HATE that crap. Nissan dropped the ball on that tranny. Especially since I'm going turbo, don't want to crunch gears with all that power. Just have to work a few days of OT

QUESTION: Is the 6th gen Maxima manual tranny the same as the 5.5gen manual tranny? Can that be swapped as a direct fit since Nissan corrected that problem with the 6th gen?? Or are they totally different? I was thinking instead of rebuilding I could just get one from a 6th gen Maxima, but don't know.

Hmm....gonna make some phone calls to see. Finding one with HLSD might be a challenge. Might be better off replacing sycns.....did you have to replace all of them or just that 3rd gear one?

Actually I just PMed aacshun and he told me that all I have to do is buy a used Spec-V tranny (they all have LSD) and just use the LSD bellhousing from my Maxima. He said it is just a simple drop in. He told me to use the final gear from my Maxima though. Spec-V used trannies are cheap about $400-$500 plus labor installing tranny....I was told at this transmission shop $400 to install. So for under $1000 fixed all sychro problems.....this SPEC-V swap into a 5.5 Gen has been done before.....so I think I'm going that route instead of paying all that money to rebuild.

I do not mean to go OT but a 6spd from the 6th gen maxima no longer has the issue with the 3rd gear crunch. Nissan had fixed that issue with better internals. Plus it has a different Final Drive as well. And if you cannot find an HLSD trans from a 6th gen, you can just swap over the HLSD diff from your current trans into it.

Or another option is to use the 6spd from the Sentra Se-R.

interesting. I would've never thought about the sentra tranny. this is a must for me since I have a bad 6th gear synchro, and that stupid 3rd gear crunch. THANKS GUYS!

Best part is that the sentra trans from the se-r spec v is an HLSD unit.

Car looks good but I have to say good luck on having the rust repaired in the wheel well lips. My car is identical to yours and my right rear lip rusted out, I've had the rust cut out and new metal welded in 2 times in the 4.5 years I've owned it and the rust comes back every time...I've been told the only way to ensure it doesn't come back is to replace the entire quarter panel.

The rust comes back even after it's painted?

It ends up rusting from the inside out from how I understand it, I had it fixed once half-assed with bondo for $300 and it came back through new paint within a month. I then took it to a legit place and they cut a sizable section completely out that was rusted and welded in a new piece then repainted...this ended up coming back through after 3-4 months. I brought it back to the same place to show them and the guy said the only real way to fix it would be to replace the entire rear quarter. At that point I just stopped worrying about it, nearly 3.5 years later its rusted out pretty good to the point that it's visible on the outer side of the wheel well...

Well damn I've never heard of a shop warrantying rust on a nearly 10 year old car for 3 years but I'd certainly take them up on that one!
