Interior Dome Light LED

Hey Guys,

Yesterday I started replacing the interior bulbs with LED's and replaced dome light I replaced it with an SMD panel but something weird when I have the switch set to the middle so when I open my door the light should go on, when the doors are closed it emits a small bit of light out of the panel, when the doors are open they are bright.

When I move the switch to off it turns off completely.

Why is this ?

why though ? does that mean the possibility of higher battery drain ?

I think it has to do with the Polarity, I'm not 100% sure, Let tunermaxima3000 chime in, he knows more about LEDs.

I believe its caused by the backflow of current.

I had the same style bulbs and had the same glow. Switched out to this style

and due to the circuitry, no more glow.

Have the same thing, but it doesnt bother me. Looks actually kinda cool with dim interior light.

so I have to get a bigger panel ? I don't get what you mean by you switched to the above style as mine is similar just not as much led's.

I have had the issue with my spot light, I mean led dome light but hasn't failed to start with in the past 2 years on a interstate I installed back in 05... Although, I notice the door light on the gauges is faintly illuminated during a drive since I threw smd LEDs in the doors..


Over all, I wouldn't worry about it... Hasn't failed me nor many others on the forum so you should be on the safe side with any panel you throw in the dome light...

I've had mine for about 2 years and its something I learned to ignore. Its not going to drain your battery.

This is common with most LED panels in our dome lights. The reason is because the dome light is ground triggered. Meaning it has power ALL THE TIME, but when the door opens it grounds out which turns the light on.

The LED's use such a small amount of current that they actually find just enough ground to illuminate just that little bit.

Better LED boards do not do this/don't do it as much. Cheap ones have less insulation and cheaper board material so they trickle power easier than the higher quality ones.

The one I have had circuitry to stop the back flow of current. Specifically to stop the slight glow when off.

so which one do you recommend buying?

Also, is there a way that it doesn't look like a bunch of dots lit up? or do you not notice that when the light is actually on?

^VLED's or Superbrights should be good. Anything else is a bit of a gamble. I can direct you to the LED's I was/am selling, they do stay on a touch but not bad. If you want them off completely then try Superbright or Vledss

what part number should I look for? I want them off completely when the door is off. I will probably go with super brights again since I had good luck with them for my dash lights and am thinking about ordering different LED's for my dash because my climate control is too bright with my dash being dimmer...
