My Key Broke

I dropped my keys and the plastic piece that goes through the key ring broke. Now, I can't hook the key to the remote or to my other keys. I tried to super glue it back, and it lasted about two days, then broke again. Do I have to replace the entire key, or is there something I can buy to slip over the key to fix this? 2000 Maxima SE.

Thanks in advance.

Keith

Get a new key, they are inexpensive.

Yeap, go to the dealer and ask for a new one. They'll need your VIN number. Cost me $28.xx with tax. The new sure looks better than the copy key the last owner gave me. So now I have one original key + 2 copy keys.

I'm glad I read this post, I went to get a key cut today and was told I couldn't because there's a chip in it and was dreading calling the dealership.

The key is inexpensive. Programming it isn't. Haven't called the dealer to verify, but I believe I will be out about $100 to $150 or so for new key and re-programming of all of the keys.

Other ideas out there? Anybody know of someone that makes a slip-on cover?

Cut up an eBay remote cover, slip your key in and glue it. **** it.

EDIT: Or epoxy the broken piece back on.

You can remove the RF chip out the bottom of the key and stick it in the new one.

If just the thin bar of plastic broke, you could drill a hole in the head of the key.

Takes patience but take two part epoxy and a paper clip. Keep trying to get the epoxy to bridge the break in the plastic loop. After a while, you'll get it started and built up. It'll last a little while.

I did this for a alarm/remote that broke in a similar place. The epoxy lasted a few months until I said #&@k it and bought a new one.

This is what I used. I had an eBay flip key, just get your eBay key cut, remove the chip in the key, and swap the remote. Sadly I broke mine cause I threw it at a tree one time when I was mad

You can try this: get a regular key cut for like $5 and then just leave the broken chip piece in the car at all times. Not sure if it needs to be near the steering column or if you can get away with leaving it in the center console. Worst case, just leave it attached to the keyring.

No one outside the car would know that you have it in there.

This is what I have done until I get around to buying a new key.

Thanks,

i actually broke my main key last night and my other original chip was fried but i just taped the two together and the second key now starts the car...as long as a key that works is near the key it will start and run properly

Look on ebay man. They should have something that you can buy to replace your existing shell case.

Saw the exact same thing on ebay for less than $10, free shipping. Going to order one this week. Hope my dealer is as reasonably priced as yours, my experience is that everything takes at least an hour, at $90 or more.
