15k Service

15k Service
Time for 15k service on my 2k SE...
Anywayz, the dealer wants 255.65... ya right!!!
I figure i'll just pick out oil/filter change (21.95) + fuel filter replacement (49.95) + air filter replacemenet (19.95) off their "menu"
(the only other important thing looks like tire rotation, but I had that done at close to 10,000.... everything else is BS inspections and such... ie. they want me to pay them $29.95 to inspect the brakes, etc.)
My question is, how much do the fuel filter and air filters cost? How hard is it to replace them yourself? (i'd imagine the air filter would be pretty easy).
suggestions?
-Tom Z.
PS. Anyone know what "minor automatic/manul transmission service" means? at 15,000 miles!?!?

life of the vehicle. Just clean it every 50,000 miles.
K&N runs for about $45 to $50 @ local parts store.

Don't forget about the brakes, and they are probably charging you for some sort of flush. They always suggest it whenever they get a chance.

Re: Re: 15k Service
Well, what exactly is the brake inspection, other than them just looking at it???? personally, i don't think it sounds all that important. I've never had issues with my brakes. No warped rotors (knock on wood), and my car grips the road like glue when you mash the brake (on my stock tires, thats good enough inspection for me)
They don't want any kind of flush this time around... (coolant drain/flush/refill is listed at 30k)

You really don't have to worry about service till you get around 60K.. For now just oil change, air filter is good enough.. When you hit 30 get the flush of tf, and anti-freeze.. Maybe spark plugs if you want...

Ya... i think i'm just gonna go for air filter (maybe K&N), and have them do the oil change.. (it's a lot less messy to have them change my oil.. and hell, for $20 I think it's worth it..)

Re: 15k Service
Tom,
I look at the manual when it comes to services, and then deterine what I want to do. Screw the dealer and their service pamphlets. At 15,000 I needed an oil change, air filter, tire rotation...That's it.
For the 30,000 service I changed the oil, air filter, and all fluids....tranny, brake, and radiator. The dealer wanted 450.00 for this service, I shopped things around and had the stuff listed done for about $195.00.
The fuel filter never needs to be replaced according to the owners manual.
Good luck and don't let them take you for a fool.

they check for wear on your brakes, measure how worn your parts are. If they tell you brakes need replacement, don't agree right away. Ask them to put down in writing the results of measurements (thickness of pads/rotors?), VS. OEM standards...my 15K service cost me $35 (oil/filter change+rotation)..you don't need to replace your air/fuel filters at 15K mi, no radiator flush, no fuel treatment, no cleaning of throttle body or tune-up needed. It is a great shame that mechanics are so damn greedy and try to rip everyone off.

Nah, I was never planning on letting them "inspect" anything... I'll prolly just have them do the oil change, and go for the K&N drop in... I'll check on the fuel filter situation (check my manual[in car] , and see what they say).

the fuel filter...
From what I know, the fuel filter is located in the tank with the pump and sensors. access to it would be through back seat. I have no clue how you would depressurize the lines... but I could see a hellava mess in the making, albeit access to the filter can't be that hard. You're in FSM country now. Maybe get the FSM and 'offset' that cost of going to the dealer. I mean, it could be the mechanics first one to do too.. and your car could smell like a tanker forever. I dont know that, but it seems possible.

Hmm... well, i definitely don't think that's what they had in mind for 15k service ... i'll ask tomorrow

after rotation is it?
RL RR

Thanks [/QUOTE ]
My understanding is that it should be:
RR RL
FR FL
That way, if you are using tread on the outside of your tire, it will now be on the inside where it will be worn less.

you only swap front to rear...
its in the manual. its not the best for wear, but helps you not have belt separation or slipped/pulled belt. You're car will handle like unicycle with a flat if a belt slips.
