Does anyone make a precat testpipe?

And if not how ridiculous / expensive would it be to fab something up?

No one makes them. You have to gut one if you want it hollow and install sims or spark plug anti foulers.

The mounting flange is whats going to kill you if you try to make one.on my old 03 i actually went to a junk yard got a front cut the flange off and welded it to a random tech spun converter after cutting the converter case to size then just welded the bottom J onto the new converter.cost me like $90 to do it.

For 2 reasons

I figured a more smother flowing pipe that was smaller then the giant chamber of the pre catt might make more power due to reduced turbulence and increased scavenging (Also gutting the one Pre Cat sounds like a freaking B****)

and if it was possible to fab up a test pipe on the cheap, possibly start making them to sell as a cheap alternative to headers

Just kinda thinking out loud

Thats funny, I had almost similar convo about this the other day.

I'm in the process of gutting cats. I'm doing it on pre cats friend removed after his header install I'm just waiting for him to find the other pre cat.

Anybody / know or try just gutting front pre cat? And leaving the other?

Also a completely off the wall idea and probably even harder to do, but make the rear test pipe in a loop of sorts to make a "equal" length design

Lol

Yeah it seems losing the front precats would save 5-10lbs too if they were replaced with test pipes too. But gutting might be the cheaper/faster option unless future y-pipes incorporated the length to delete precats.

That would be perfect. I'm surprised it was never done.
I still haven't found the motivation to drop the rear. I'm not looking forward to the actual gutting process for that one. I will say that there is definitely a lot more grunt with the front gutted. I won't speak to performance gains because I have no repeatable data, but I'm glad to know you do. This may be the extra motivation I need to finally gut the rear.
Found this from an old thread. So maybe some gains to be had with just front precat gutted.

I rolled for a couple of months like that just gutted the front, since rear was fairly new...but then gutted that one also, the rear was a b1tch....but now Cattman Headers and and they save you like 15- 20lbs on weight......

If you are interested, I have a Custommaxima.com race Y-pipe w/ extra O2 bungs and federal exhaust manifolds off my 2001 AE that I willing to part with for a reasonable price. Just PM me.

The problem is that the 02-03 exhausts are different and no one has made a precat deleting y-pipe for those years. Your 01 y-pipe is not compatible.

Might work.

What would be the issue?

It is if you install the exhaust manifolds which he also has.

You might as well install headers at that point.

Technically, you would be. Gains wouldn't be as much but at least fitment would be on point and parts would probably cost half as much.

Def something to think about too, I was weary of trying headers on my own especially since the ones i could afford (OBX) are not always a good fit

Thinking Ill just gutting em and use the money saved on headers to tune

I apologize that I missed the 02-03 Maxima. The 01 exhaust manifold nor the y-pipe will not work on the 02-03 Maxima. I also have a CustomMaxima.com test pipe that I would be willing to part with for a reasonable price. I don't know if I ever want to give up my old FrankenCar catback, but for the right price I might consider it as well. All items are slightly used and still in great condition.

so exhaust manifolds with test pipes...

That is simply any aftermarket header set up. You save the weight because it's stainless vs cast iron and you get all the performance gains and getting rid off all the pre-cats and don't have to weld new bungholes or anything.

I didn't really have any issues when installing my OBX.

Why wouldn't the exhaust manifold/y-pipe set-up not work for 02-03?

I'm using 4th gen headers on my 03 right now.

Nmex,
Did you have any fitment issues putting on the 4th gen headers and y. Also what brand are they obx or ebay version . Was just looking at the 4th gen sets and seem to be 1/2 the price of 5th gens.

Also was wondering if 4th gens may not work would adding an aftermarket y pipe to a custom 2.5 exhasust from the cat (test pipe) back would that make any diff

Edit: Would these work?

Mine are Cattman, Gen I. They went on perfectly, the only thing I needed to do was plug the EGR, but that really wasn't a fitment issue. Thread a plug and it was done.
