2001 MAF on 2002 question

Went to the dealership yesterday to pick up replacement belts. While I was there I asked for a quote on a 2001 MAF to get an idea. I have read its pretty easy to put in a 2002. The guy was a real nice guy. He said that the part has been changed and when you buy the MAF ($118) the car MUST be reprogrammed or it wont run right at all.

He also said that there is a place in MA that will rebuild my current MAF and maybe I should check them out. My questions, this "newer MAF" require the car get reprogrammed? Can an MAF be rebuilt? Wise choice? Is this really a newer MAF?

I've never heard of a MAFS being rebuilt, I woudn't even think about getting that done.

Can't help you on the new maf thing, I do have one or two spares downstairs though....

A rebuilt would be OK if they used the correct thermistor. But then when I think about starters and alternators...

The guy was real cool. He even recommended I come on here and ask about it. He did say that most people replace the MAF in a 2002 because that thermistor breaks but idk about that.

And yes, years ago without a reprogram it would be fine. The guy is saying the part has changed or the maker has changed or something like that and this NEWER model needs the programming.

U MUST KNO IF UR ORIGINAL MAF HAS 4 OR 5 PINS. THE 4 PIN MAF ONLY HAS THE MAF SENSOR IN IT WHILE THE 5 PIN MAF HAS THE INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR INTERGRATED. I FOUND THIS OUT WHEN I ORDERED A NEW MAF FOR MY 02 MAX. THEY GAVE ME AN 02 MAF WITH 4 PINS. ANY 02 MAX MADE AFTER JULY HAS THE 5 PIN MAF LIKE THE 03. KEEP US POSTED DUDE.

Thats good to know if it is true, man. Did not answer my questions though. I will post again once I get an MAF. Mine is not dead but I have a feeling a new one is a good idea.

I bought a 2001 maf from nissan and in the box it had a paper explaining the need for a reprogram. I swapped the thermister and installed and never had an issue.

I am unsure if there could be a performance advantage to getting the reprogram but my car feels as fast as it should. I can tell you that the car will run. As long as that was the issue of course.
