There is a reason Nissan only calls one of them their "Flagship".

Oh, definitly go with the Altim...mitlA.....MAXIMA!!! The max has a better interior and some features not available on the alty. Plus demand for aly's is great, so it will be a lot easier to get a maxima at invoice rather than an altima.

My friend just got the Altima. We had some beef and didnt talk for a year. Well I heard he bought one so I swung by. I b1tch slapped him for not getting a 3.5.. Anyway, it's a nice car but he even admits that the Max is a much better car overall. The interior just plain bites. Too cheap looking and plain. I parked my car in front of his and took a step back. The Max still looks better in my eyes. I don't know, the Altima just looks... overweight.

Maxima, my opinion of the Altima is that it looks like a retarded 300M...but that's my opinion, Max all the way man.

Re: 2002 maxima or 2002 altima

I've been shopping for a new car and pondered the same question. While I think the exterior of the Altima looks great, the appearance of the interior ended any thought of an Altima for me. It struck me as far more than a notch down from the Maxima.

I was faced with the same dilemma. It came down to this...
Altima -- Better chassis, more modern exterior
Maxima -- Better build quality (Japan), much better interior, faster acceleration, a few features not available on Altima.
After many back-to-back drives in several different trim levels, I bought the Maxima.

I just sold my 96 Maxima and am about to buy a 00 Maxima, but only because of the price.

If I had the money, I'd buy the Altima for sure. Better suspension and better looking IMO.

GO WITH THE MAXIMA!! 100%. The altima is an OK, keyword OK, however; the altima looks overweight and has a ****ty interior. Also, the maxima is much faster and alot better looking car. Go with the MAXIMA!

It depends on your taste. I would go with the Max if you got the cash. The Alti is nice but the interior kills it. If you can live with a cheap lookin interior go with the Alti and save some cash.

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING

I just bought a Max last week. When I first saw the Alt last year I fell in love, until I felt the interior. I like the exterior of the Alt a little better, but the interior of the Max is MUCH better then the Dodge Neonish plastics of the Altima. Plus you get a lot more options with the Max then teh Alt and after wheeling and dealing it will be cheaper. Trade off, is probably only suspension, the rear suspension of the max is beam while the Alt is independent. Thats a small trade off though in my eyes when compared to the interior.

I have driven both. Performance was the same. The guages and gerneral tackiness of the Altima was a big minus.

You get what you pay for. I actually bought an Altima, but it never showed up, so I switched to a Maxima. Both are really nice fast cars, but the Maxima SE costs a couple grand (Cdn) more than an Altima SE. For that extra cash you get HIDS, better: plastics, cloth/leather, a spoiler, microfilter and wider tires. The Altima has a newer suspension, but the 2k2 Maxima handles good enough for me. Either car will make you smile

I have driven both as well.. (alty to get the free watch!!!.. maxima cuz i wanted to!!)

anyway, I have to agree, performance-wise I find they are very similar, and I couldn't really "feel" that much diff in acceleration btw. the 2k2 max and the 3.5 altima. (the numbers do tell that the maxima is quicker)

The handling was comparable, I preferred the maxima, but I guess that might just be because I'm more used to the way my 2k Maxima SE feels.

Bottom line is that I wouldn't buy a 3.5 Altima. I just can't justify spending that much and getting a lackluster interior. I might get the 2.5 if I was strapped for cash, but if you're going to put out all that money for the 3.5 you might as well put a grand or two more in and get a maxima. (actually 3.5 altima invoice is somewhere in the 23's... around maxima gxe territory!)

With the maxima, not only do you get the better performance, but you also get a MUCH better interior, and a much classier ride overall. (Btw. I also test drove the Infiniti I35 [free wireless headphones, i'm a ho for free stuff]. Anyway, the Maxima is basically the same car as the I35 (In fact, I preferred the 2k2 maxima to the I35!!). I believe that the overall quality of the Maxima is comparable to semi-luxury sedan like the I35, wheras the Altima still leaves a lot to be desired.

But then again, what's my opinion worth? We're all kind of biased because we own maximas!!!

I've had my max now for three months and I cannot go anywhere w/o someone giving a compliment or sharing at it, even at parking garages where these guys see BMW's and Benz's all day.
Go for the Max you wouldn't be sorry. The Max is a completely different class of car compared to the Alty.

You're right...I always have people say stuff about Maxima's being so expensive (which is good...) I don't think alot of people know that the Altima has been redesigned....Just ask someone what they think of Alty's and I bet they will refer to the old 4 cylinder models....It just doesn't conjure up the same image that a Max does....

Just my .002

Do a little research on pricing.
The difference between the Altima and Maxima, IDENTICALLY equipped is $1,800 Invoice.
Now with a $1000 customer rebate on 2002 Maxima, the difference is merely $800.00!!

VERY MUCH WORTH IT!!

Not only that, but for 1800 bucks you get Memory Seating, Heated steering wheel, 15HP, and from what I have heard, less torque steer. Plus there is a lot more room to haggle for a Max then an Alt, I just got mine for 27,300 (MSRP 30,401) before 1k cash back. The Alt's in the showroom were marked 27 and change.

The decision...

...is simple. Maxima. Everything I've read I agree on. My neighbor bought an 02 Altima and my first reaction was "what is up with this cheapo interior?"

Max is best.

interior?

Ok, I'll bite. I was thinking of trading in my loaded '00 GLE for an Altima 3.5. But You guys don't think that would be a good thing to do? Can you give me some reasons not to? Besides saying that the interior is crappy, can you tell me how it's crappy? I've seen only pictures of the altima and didn't get to test drive it cuz the wife would wack me.

Get in an Alt and poke around. My biggest turn off was the doors, cheap plastic there. Now look down at the fuel door release, they have a carpet cutout for it!! Now continue to look down at the seat track, it is more exposed in the Alt then the Max. Look up at the gauge binocal, cheap plastic there. Look for the heated steering wheel, oh it seems to be missing. Program your seat selection into the seat memory, damn someone must have stolen it. Now move to the passanger side, look at the power seat, oh no wait there isn't one. Open the trunk, it's lined much cheaper then the Max. Granted some of this is a bit picky, but when you can spend just about the same amount of cash and get more, I think it's a safe bet.

Having owned 4 maximas and recently trading my 2k se for a new altima I have no regrets for buying this car. Nissan has done a great job with the new altima, I will admit the interior is not as nice as my maxima was, but it is better than anything from the big 3 and many of other makes. The trade off for the independent rear suspension and a current body style for the next 4 to 5 years are what convinced me to purchase the car. I could not justify paying for a car after its product life cycle had changed. that is one of the reasons I did not get another maxima. Who wants to pay for a car 2 or 3 years after the new model has come out? Another is the altima has more front seat room due in part ot the layout of the dash I'm 6'4" 260lbs and sometimes my max felt cramped due to the waterfall designed dash. Granted the 2k2 max has options that are not available on the altima, heated steering wheel, navigation, hlsd, memory seats but my 2k max did not have any of these at the time of purchase either so it is not like I am missing them. The direction that nissan is taking the maxima will definately sway more people towards the altima. Not all households can afford a 30k+ car. In 2003-4 whenever the maxima will undergo a re-design it is likely that the car will see a major increase in price, and nissan is giving a little hint of this by cutting current maxima production to allow the higer level altimas to pickup the lost maxima sales. I am not trying to start a flaming war on what car is better, I believe that both cars are exceptional and I do not regret owning either of the two. Just my 2cents.
