I dont know what the cause is, but i sometimes get that.. It becomes much more pronounced when the oil is low, but even with fresh oil there is a faint rattle... its only upon the initial crank, kinda like a key turn > vroooooom > quick crunching rattle (.5 seconds) > normal.

No matter what I do I can't get rid of that cold start rattle. If car sits for more than an hour I get a slight rattle on start up. Drives me nuts! My damn 7th gen doesn't do it.

You can always try a 1/2 ltr of Lucas oil treatment which tends to stay on the moving engine parts to avoid that dry start issue.

Interesting, here I was thinking that my start-up rattle would go away once I figured out my P0300. Hmmm... It almost sounds like the chain, but, at the same time, I would think the chain rattling would be more constant and not just at start up.

Subscribed to see if anyone figures out what this is.

the mechanic told me it is the timing chain tensioner.. but if it was the noise should have been all the time not only on the start up shouldnt it??

me too...
the crunch is for a brief 0.5 seconds and during the initial surge in rpm. it was more obvious during colder weather. For 2 days after oil change it disappeared and is now back again. and also the third gear crunch and battle with the car to go to 2nd is less painful now compared to winter.
