Keeping up with fluid changes should keep shifts nice and crisp.

Does 2-3 clear up once the car is warm and driven for a bit? Does it get worst once it is hot?

I know I'm opening a bag of worms here but I always change the fluid, in my opinion if the tranny is in such bad shape that fresh oil hurts it it was dead already. That like not changing motor oil because you have an oil leak...Doesn't fix the problem.
Thanks for the quick reply Br0nz, glad to see you're still around.

The 2-3 slips are really consistent. And like I said, this started about a month ago, so I'm hoping too much damage hasn't been done. I haven't done a transmission fluid change since I bought the car this time last year, but the fluid looked pretty good. So unfortunately I don't know the last time it's been changed..

I was doing some more research and saw this post by cgr.. "i went with the hd kit as well. the shifts are extremely firm. fine with me :/ but sometimes its at a suprisingly hard jolt. it shifts just like youd expect from a heavy duty kit. didnt go with a cooler at all either. my issue was upon driving hard in third i would sometimes be unable to rev ovoer 2500 rpm. suddenly it would hit a jolt and be fine. twice i lost reverse. since the kit ive had no issues."

It's got me really hopeful. How's your trans holding up?

I opted to change my tranny since I had a friend that was out of work and did it on the cheap. However, I got rear-ended and she was totalled with only 245k! I now drive another 98 with just over 100k.

Wow that sucks... I didn't even know that the automatics came with the VLSD transmissions. You had a rare one

They were rare. I pulled one from an I30t with 69k, my original wasn't VLSD. Was a nice upgrade, i managed to make it an open diff after like 35k lol

I had this happen to me and I let the car sit for a month or so thinking I had a bad trans. One day I found this info and went out to the car to try it. I tried flooring it in reverse and it popped into gear. My used replacement alternator went bad from sitting during that time but it drives. When at idle I get the brake and batt light but when revving higher it was trying to charge and the lights would go out. I've got reverse, 1st and 2nd but won't shift into 3rd or 4th. If I leave it in D and it gets up to speed where it should go into 3rd it just revs like neutral. I was thinking about putting in a 4th gen trans since I have two spares and I know the vb and safety switch is different so I was planning on swapping those over. Also read about other similar issues like maf, 02 sensors, vss, tcm, loose ground on the vb etc. Just wondering if anyone has any more input especially now that it's been a few years.
