P0340 code for camshaft positioning sensor

I have the dreaded P0340 code on our 2002 and the car has stalled on the freeway twice now in the last four days. We got the recall done for camshaft and crankshaft sensors back in 2004 so it looks like this will need to be done on our dime. So question is how do i know if i need one camshaft sensor or need to replace both sensors? Prompt help is appreciated. I have searched for this but couldn't find what cases require both sensors replaced v/s only one? the rear sensor seems to be replaced more on this forum.

I had that code and just replaced the rear sensor. Use only a Nissan/infiniti part because otherwise it will cause a p0011 code. I learned this the hard way by buying a beck arnley part first. It ran great but the other code was there.

Yes you can get away with just replacing the faulty sensor. I just had to do this about a month ago and once the sensor was replaced the car was happy again.

As for part cost I knew a guy that knew a guy that worked at a Nissan Dealership so I got it at cost but you should be able to source it pretty cheaply from one of the Nissan part dealers here.

Just remember to push down on the plug before trying to disengage it. After that it comes off easy.

Hey guys I had a question, for those that replaced the cam sensor is it better to go with OEM or just replace it with an aftermarket piece? I ask because the difference is about $70 dollars and times are a little tough so I need to save every dollar I can plus, I have to replace 2 oxygen sensors as well, if I go with Nissan OEM parts I will pay about $500 vs paying for replacement parts will only run me about $200

Buy the cam shaft sensor OEM, then just get some Bosch O2 sensors. That should save you a couple of bucks.

The P0340 code is for the bank 1 sensor which is the side closest to the firewall. That is the 23731M CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (23731-A33B009).

The real part number is 23731-AL615 (superceeded by 23731-AL61A). It costs $77.12 (plus shipping charges) at nissanpartszone.com.
