Reverse trouble with 2001 5speed after clutch master and slave cylinder replacement

As the title says, I've recently started having trouble with reverse on my 2001 Nissan Maxima with the 5 speed manual. Here's the background, and I'll explain the details of the problem shortly. A few weeks ago, I lent the car to someone for a week, and they ended up keeping it for three. I'm not exactly sure what happened during that time, but I got a call that the clutch was blown out from the person who borrowed it. It appears he tried to put some clutch fluid in to the car, as there was a half empty bottle left in the vehicle when I got it back. I paid $200 to have the car towed to my mechanic, who decided that it was actually the clutch master and slave cylinders that had gone out. He replaced those, and I drove the car home with no issues. However, ever since then the car seems to only go into reverse when it wants to. When I search for solutions to this problem, I usually get explanations about how reverse is different from all the other gears and doesn't always line up. I am aware of that situation, and used to just letting the car roll a little and then putting it in reverse. This, however, feels different then the gears not matching up. Instead, it is almost as if the switch to prevent you from shifting from 5th to reverse (instead of 4th) is engaged even though the car is at a dead stop. At first, it seemed to have less trouble when cool, but lately the problem has been more intermittent and I can't come up with a definite cause. Any ideas as to what could be wrong? I'm hoping I don't need a new transmission, but I want to keep this car for another few years during college.
